This is a rant

OK. So, I went on to Pieces of Flair for a few minutes during my reading tonight, and typed in "Obama". One of the things that struck me was that a bunch of pissed off McCain supporters were hijacking anti-Bush slogans like "Don't blame me- I didn't vote for him." or ""Not my President." Above and beyond that, they were saying things like: "Canada ( Read more... )

I think that "Don't blame me, I voted for X" has been a popular slogan for the losing side in elections for decades, so you can't really blame Republicans for co-opting that. And the "not my president" thing makes about the same amount of sense.

As for running away to another country, in terms of progressive to conservative ranking of those major English speaking countries, I would rank them New Zealand, Canada, Britain, Australia, USA (though of course there are some exceptions in individual policies). Australia allows gays to serve openly in the military, but no state allows even full civil unions for same-sex couples. For almost a century the official immigration policy was the "White Australia policy". But that's mostly loosened now, and they're slightly more internationalist than Americans now. But it's probably the best bet for McCain supporters in the industrialized world.

Oh, and my similar rant about who's from the "real America" - anyone who waves the flag of a nation that rebelled against America isn't allowed to claim that they're more patriotic than anyone else.

Well said and I am sure you can muster up a smidge more bile on that topic.

Interesting thought (and a JK), as a vast generalisation, the rural and small town Americans go pissing off everyone else with their super macho, neo con foreign policy and the terrorists attack the liberal urbanites. Maybe it is a very subtle attempt at a cull.

Unfortunately for Republicans the USA is by far the most conservative of the English speaking nations, closest match would be rural Australia where they also have a racism issue and more guns but even there they have social health care.

Maybe South Africa, but not if they don't like being in a minority.

Yep they got nowhere to run, even the old facist states in South America are all a bit left wing now.

Bizarrley, Russia would probably suit them, a rampant free market, huge gap between rich and poor, a strong nationalist leader, lots of open spaces and high military spending coupled with a super tough foreign policy. Yep, Russia is the place for them, who saw that coming.

I don't agree with all, however, you raise some really good points.
