It started with a few fainting spells, not exactly at the most opportune time, but still pretty benign. Kendrix had firmly been against getting checked out for it since it didn’t seem like that big of a deal and she didn’t want doctors poking at any extra Power she’d gotten. After about a week, however, the fainting spells began to be accompanied by headaches and nausea. At that point, Mike and Leo both gently reminded her that it could be something serious and possibly contagious. Mike convinced the others to back him up, which they did, as Leo called Andros to see if he’d take her to Earth, which he would.
Once aboard, it was Karone who got a hold of Dana Mitchell and told her they’d be there soon. She held her predecessor’s hand the entire time she did so, reminding her that even if Karone was back with the Astro Rangers, she was still a Galaxy Ranger as well. Kendrix had also requested Angela Rawlings be there as well for the Power side of it which was easily agreed upon. By this point, she could barely stand which left her trapped in the medical room.
She’d fallen asleep soon after, letting the exhaustion from trying to deal with the nausea and headaches take over. It was several hours before she woke up, grateful that the light in the room was darkened. She forced her eyes open and started to sit up before she heard voices from outside the room.
“Are you sure?” Kendrix recognized Dana’s voice and the near begging that accompanied it. She laid back and listened.
“It’s breaking up,” Angela responded, though her voice was strained as well. “There’s nothing we can do.”
“How is this possible?”
“How did she come back at all?” Angela asked. “I can only tell you what I see. She’s made up from the Power and it’s breaking apart now.”
“How long?”
“A week? Maybe? Probably a couple of days,” Angela said. There was silence for a minute.
“What do I tell her?” Dana asked. “I don’t want her to give up…”
“I’ll do it,” Angela offered. “We’re old friends.”
“I’ll call the others then,” Dana said quickly as she headed down the hall. Kendrix just stared up at the ceiling. All of her worries had come true in their conversation. She was dying. That explained why it was steadily getting worse instead of better. She was literally breaking apart. For a moment, she wondered if her body was even real. She couldn’t do anything for herself, but she could make it easier on everyone else. Angela came in a little while later and took her place at Kendrix’ side. Kendrix offered her a smile.
“Hey, Angie?” Kendrix said. “Do you remember our sophomore year at college? During biology?”
“You mean when you decided to go into life science and I firmly went into physical?” She asked. Kendrix nodded and reached over to take her hand.
“You panicked when you saw the dead cat we had to dissect and nearly cried,” Kendrix told her. “Do you remember what I told you?”
“That everything has its time,” Angela answered. There was silence for a minute. “You know.”
“I heard you in the hall, but I guessed,” Kendrix admitted. “I just thought that if I ignored the possibility, it wouldn’t happen.”
“Why didn’t you come for help sooner?” Angela demanded. Kendrix chuckled.
“There’s nothing you can do, Angela,” she answered. “And I just wanted to be on Mirinoi a little longer. The flora is gorgeous there, Angie. It’s everything I could have asked for.”
“We’re sending for your team now,” Angela assured her and Kendrix nodded. “Can you hold on until they get here?”
“I have to,” she whispered. She looked over at Angela and the Lightspeed tech finally noticed the tears coming down her friends face. “Angie? Don’t leave me?”
“I… I can’t fix you,” Angela said back in the same whisper. Kendrix just squeezed her hand.
“I know.”
Both of them stayed that way for hours as Dana checked in to see how they were doing every other hour, scrambling to try to find something that would save Kendrix’ life. Even after the rest of her team arrived, Angela didn’t let go. None of the Galaxy Rangers complained about it, but just worked around her so that Kendrix was surrounded by her friends. Each of them were holding onto her to let her know they were there. No one said much of anything as Kendrix’ periods of awakeness became shorter and shorter. They merely stayed by her as her breathing began to become shallow as she seemed to almost fade in an out. And they were all awoken when Angela screamed at the nothingness that was in her hand in the end. Just as she had reappeared, the body was taken back to the Power. Leaving nothing physical behind.
