Retsu held the morpher in his hands, looking up at his older brother. The excitement in his eyes must have translated over to his brother because Gou gently, but firmly grabbed it back before Retsu got any delusions of grandeur. Still, just holding it had meant something to Retsu. The black morpher. Sure, it was the test morpher, but still Retsu wanted it. Gou just set it back on his own wrist and looked at his little brother. “Maybe when you’re older.”
“Gou,” Retsu slightly argued, but there was no real force behind it. He just grinned at his brother. “Maybe they’re waiting to give me the blue one.”
Gou snorted a bit, but gave his brother a half smile. “You’ve still got a long way to go, Officer before they give you a morpher.”
“Sorry, Lieutenant. I’ll remember that,” Retsu said back with a matching smile. It didn’t bother him too much. Gou was older and more prepared than he was. It made sense that he’d get the test morpher. And nothing was set in stone. Retsu was a good officer, when he wasn’t busy with his art. Gou had given up trying to get him a desk job, as stubbornness seemed to run in the family, and had decided to work with Retsu instead. Captain Shafu had been extremely happy with that decision, since two of his best officers had quit fighting after that, and both brothers were happy to prove themselves to their commanding officer and mentor.
The quiet moment was interrupted by Gou’s wrist beeping. He pressed down and a hologram popped up. “Lieutenant!” They heard. “Ransik!”
Gou’s eyes widened. “I brought him in yesterday!”
“He escaped!” The hologram explained. “Time Force headquarters…”
“Officer Fukami and I will handle it,” he assured them and turned to his brother, going completely into Time Force Lieutenant mode. “Officer, let’s move!”
This time there was no exaggeration on it, the difference between their work relationship and their familial relationship. They raced toward the building that Ransik was in, ready to face the mutant. Gou motioned to a pillar which Retsu hid behind, pulling out his blaster. He was better with melee weapons, but they weren’t practical in the Force. Gou raised his blaster and spoke. “Time Force! You’re wanted for several different crimes, one of which being escaping custody. Your companions are wanted for aiding and abetting. Please come quietly!” When they didn’t, as Gou knew they wouldn’t, he spoke again. “Time for Time Force! Officer, take the others! I’ve got Ransik!”
“Right!” Retsu answered. Both were careful not to give away their names or the fact that they were related. That could be used against them, more against Gou than Retsu, but neither wanted to put the other in the position of choosing between family and earth. Retsu shot in the right direction, trying to stop Ransik’s allies while Gou went against head mutant.
Retsu’s adversaries began to head out, one by one, as there was only one of Retsu and several of them. Finally, it was him against a woman and Gou against Ransik. Ransik threw Gou away from him, leaving the Ranger tired a bit while Retsu was barely managing to hold his own. Retsu tiredly glanced over and saw something shine. He dodged the woman and got a closer look and his eyes widened. “Bomb! It’s a trap!”
Gou’s head whipped around and he looked at his brother. “Retsu! Get out of here! I’ll handle it from here!”
Retsu looked over at his brother who seemed to be wearing down. “You need my help!”
“Retsu! Get the hell out of here! It’s going to explode!” Gou yelled. He headed against Ransik, who hit Gou hard enough to throw him out of morph. He winced, trying to get up.
“Brother!” Retsu called out, racing toward him. He felt claws rake across his stomach, scratching him, but not killing him. He looked to see the woman he was fighting, grinning at him. He tried to kick her away, rushing toward his brother and stopped when something got in the way of his scrambling. Ransik reached toward him and grabbed him by the neck, throwing him across the room, toward the opposite door before leaving. Part of Retsu realized that the second part of the bomb was a distraction, but he was too concentrated on his brother. “Gou!”
“Retsu! Get out!” Gou yelled back, dragging himself toward the exit slowly.
“Gou! I’m coming!” Retsu started, trying to get back to Gou.
“Get out, you idiot!”
Retsu’s eyes widened as the room exploded. He was thrown out the door and into a neighbor building. He fell unconscious.

“Officer… Lieutenant… survived… didn’t make it… tell him… Ransik…” The words made little sense to Retsu’s brain. He tried to get up, but they held him back down. They didn’t have to tell him. Retsu already knew his brother was dead.
“Retsu,” a voice pierced through his brain. He recognized it and opened his eyes as much as he could to face Captain Shafu. His commanding officer looked extremely sympathetic.
“Ransik?” Retsu asked, hoping against hope that they’d caught him. Shafu sighed.
“He went to the past, Retsu. We were trying to keep the fire from spreading and caring for you and he escaped then,” he answered before taking a breath. “Gou…”
“Is dead,” Retsu answered for him. The captain nodded. Retsu wanted to mourn and he would, later, but right now he needed to be business oriented. “The morpher?”
“I told you he’d ask, Captain.” Retsu looked up and gave a small smile to Head of Public Relations Miki Masaki, one of his brother’s best friends. “It’s fine, Retsu. It needed to be changed a bit anyway.”
“Why?” Retsu asked and Snafu took back over.
“It’s DNA encoded, Retsu,” he reminded him. “There were two people who could use it and one of them is dead.”
“We were able to shift it to your DNA,” Miki answered gently. “You’re the only one who can be Time Force Black.”
Retsu took the morpher that they set before him and nodded. He didn’t want it, not now, but he knew it was his responsibility to get Ransik back. He’d helped let him get away, after all. Shafu looked at him sternly. “Officer Fukami,” he said. “I want to be clear on this. This isn’t a mission of revenge. If that’s what it is to you, then I will take the morpher away and there will be no Time Force Black.”
“I just want to make him proud,” Retsu answered tiredly. The answer was good enough for the captain and he nodded. Miki gave him a small smile as Retsu held it in his hand, turning it over as he had before. As Miki left, he finished looking it over and attached it to his wrist. The excitement was gone.
