I can sum up today in but a few words: stay away from Toshiba/HP laptops.

Be thankful yours still works, because once it breaks, and your warranty is expired, you're prettymuch out of luck.

Oi, toshibas suck ass. Especially the sattelites. My cousin had one, the first time she plugged it in to the wall it shorted out the motherboard. My parents have one, I spent three days repairing the registry files on it after it accidentally got unplugged.

I wanna stab the toshiba CEO in the face with a screwdriver.

I have this: http://www.laptoprepairguy.com/laptop/2006/01/28/toshiba-satellite-m35x-a75-power-jack-problem/

Spent all day getting it apart, waiting for dad to get home, we soldered it, I put it mostly back together, and then the solder breaks >_< Part of the board kinda broke off with it, so...I guess all we can do is hope that extended warranty still applies.

I'm on my third Toshiba Laptop. My first was a workhorse. I should have named it Mule, because, despite being horribly slow by today's standards, it still works. My second one, I will admit, had issues, but Toshiba has one of the best no-hassles warranty programs out there. Once it is out of warranty, though, what do you really expect any company to do for you? They're not going to cover you out of the goodness of their hearts. My current laptop, like the other two, is a Satellite series. When you buy the thing, you GET THE EXTENDED WARRANTY! I know people think extended warranties are for suckers, but the standard warranty is only going to last you a year, and you'll probably own the thing for 3-5, and invariably in that time, what with the high processor speeds of today's computers, you are going to come out with overheating issues and the like (ALL laptops have these problems!), and your money will be well spent.

It's not an overheating issue, it's a piss poor design decision. The lid had a poor design that made it short and reboot, so they had a recall on the lid. Some of the memory cards were bad, so they had a recall on those too. The DC jack breaks off, rendering your laptop completely useless? No recall ( ... )

You seem to have had very bad luck.

Like I said, this isn't an uncommon thing (I found three websites devoted to this single problem, not to mention forum posts). My laptop, and one other model of Satellite suffer from this problem. Unless by "bad luck" you mean my grandma just picked the wrong laptop to buy me.
