Word count: 621
Summary: Everyone needs something to hold onto.
When Chrome first saw Mukuro, back when she was still Nagi and fear clenched her heart in a vice, one soft spoken word swept it all away. She had gone from nothing in her mother’s eyes, to something to someone else, someone that was more important to her than the woman who birthed her ever was. Though she was prepared for the eventuality that she may be deemed useless to Mukuro, she knew that to be less likely than her mother pulling the plug on her would have been.
The next time that fear had clenched her heart in its icy fist had been when she had believed that Mukuro to be dead. In that horrible future where more than just their own lives were at stake, Chrome had felt terror close her throat. And Mukuro had been nowhere to be found, not in her mind, not in front of her. In those days, she had never felt so alone in her life. It would have been one thing if Mukuro had just tossed her aside, told her that she wasn’t worthy to be his host anymore. But just to have him gone, it hurt her more than she ever believed it could. And when he came back, it was then that she realized…
“I want something to hold onto,” she murmured to herself. It was after that final fateful battle, after Tsuna had won and they were all on their way home that she said it, believing herself to be alone.
“Do you, now?” a voice behind her said and she jumped, spinning around to face the owner of the voice. Mukuro was watching her, a curious expression on his face, though his smirk was still in place. It still surprised her to see him, flesh and blood, standing before her. She felt an overwhelming need to reach out her hand and brush her fingers along his cheek, just to make sure that he was real. She refrained from doing so, though her fingers twitched a little from the restraint.
“Mukuro-sama, I…” she started. But when he continued to watch her, the mild expression still on his features, the words caught in her throat. What was she supposed to say to him?
“You very rarely voice what you want, my cute Chrome.” He moved closer to her, though kept a respectable distance. “For you to say such a thing, even to yourself, you must truly be in need of it.” HAnd then his hand reached out to her, cupping her chin and tilting it upwards.
“Before you go back, there is something that I wish to tell you. Though we’re not to reveal anything of the future to you, I have no interest in following that rule.” And then he leaned down to her level, until she could feel his breath against her lips, could smell something minty and distinctly Mukuro, and she couldn’t stop the slight shudder that wracked her frame. “You have yet to let go of me.” Before she could say or do anything, he had stepped back, a teasing smile on his face. “Now, go, back to your time. You are needed there now, just as my Chrome is needed here.” She nodded and turned, prepared to head back to the base where they would be transported. She stopped though and couldn’t help but to look back.
“Mukuro-sama? I wouldn’t want to hold onto anyone else.” With that she walked off, leaving a surprised, but thoroughly smug Mukuro behind. Perhaps, one day, she would be able to tell the one that waited for her at home. Until that day though, she would have to satisfy herself by holding onto him. And that was more than enough for her.
