Summary: There are ways to cure insomnia.

The first time that it happened was not long after the Ring Battles, when Squalo was fully healed and he had spent a full night in Dino’s bed. Up until that point, they had met in various hotels, and Squalo had left as soon as the sweat on their bodies had cooled. So, when Squalo informed Dino in no uncertain terms that he would be spending the night (though it was more along the lines of I’m too fucking tired to move, I’m staying here for the night), Dino had been baffled, but happy. It was a step forward in their relationship, and maybe he’d be able to talk to him about making this more than just warming each other’s beds.

That was, until he was jostled awake by Squalo getting up and pacing the room no less than twenty minutes after they had fallen to sleep. Dino sent him a sleepy glare as he sat up, wanting to do nothing more than to sleep. He went to tell him that when Squalo just looked at him and shook his head.

“Go to sleep. I’ll be there soon,” he said. Though Dino sent him a suspicious look, he shrugged and laid back down. He was out as soon as his head hit the pillow, exhausted from a long day of being the Cavallone boss and from the activities of his unexpected visitor.

The next time it happened, Dino was acutely aware that the swordsman, after telling him to sleep, never came back to bed himself, instead stalking about the room like a wound up cat. He paced around, restless, only settling down after he had found a book to read. And even then, he couldn’t seem to stop moving, a leg jostling up and down. It was almost as if he was anticipating something, something that never came. Though he settled after Dino came over and they made love (Dino’s term, not Squalo’s; never Squalo’s), he never came back to bed, and he never once asked for Dino to stay awake.

It became routine for them, in an odd sort of way. Squalo would come over, they would make love into the early hours of the morning, and then Squalo would sleep for about twenty minutes before getting up. After the fourth week of this, Dino was tired of it, exhausted from sleepless nights with Squalo and then sleepless nights without Squalo, worrying about whether he was sleeping at the Varia mansion. So, to end the restless nights, he came up with a plan.

He put it into action one night, when they lay panting on the bed, sweaty and sated. Squalo’s face was nestled in his neck, a faint purr rumbling in his chest. It was his favorite position when he was settling, cradled in Dino’s arms as hands stroked over his hair and back, tangling in the thick, long strands. He was surprised though, when the hold tightened, not allowing for any movement really. He shifted to glare at Dino.

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing, Bucking Horse?” he hissed, his eyes narrowed. If he was anyone else, he might be moved by the concern in Dino’s eyes. Instead, he was annoyed by it, trying to wrench himself from Dino’s grip. It was easy to forget sometimes that Dino was as strong as he was, but he remembered quickly when Dino overpowered him, either during sex or now, holding him from going anywhere.

“Why won’t you sleep with me?” he asked in a quiet voice, one that, for some reason, always made Squalo feel a twinge of guilt. Not that that he would admit, to himself or to Dino, but it was there, tugging at the heart that he didn’t have.

“I do sleep with you. We fuck on a near constant basis.”

“No. Why won’t you sleep with me? Why, when we’re done making love…” Dino paused to laugh when Squalo made a face, not at all offended by it, before continuing, “do you sleep for twenty minutes and then get up to pace the room? Why won’t you just stay with me?” Squalo rolls his eyes, laying his head down on Dino’s shoulder.

“How the fuck am I supposed to sleep when I’m worried that I’m going to have something thrown at me as soon as I fucking fall asleep? Or that someone is going to start hollering and shooting fire and shit?” And suddenly, Dino understood. It wasn’t because of him that Squalo couldn’t sleep. It was constantly being at the beck and call of Xanxus and his demands that did it. Squalo probably didn’t sleep more than twenty minutes to an hour at a time, woken by the screams of his boss. He cupped Squalo’s cheeks, lifting his head so he can press kisses to his forehead, his cheeks, and his lips lightly. Though Squalo made a protesting noise, he didn’t move away from him.

“You can sleep here. No one is going to demand anything from you.” He gave him another kiss, slow and searching, tongue flickering out to meet Squalo’s. “Close your eyes.” Squalo just gave him a look before sighing and doing as asked, laying his head on Dino’s shoulder. Squalo’s purrs started up again as Dino’s fingers started to run through his hair again. And then Dino began to hum softly, before he began to sing, a low and soft lullaby.

“What the…”

“Shh…” Dino hushed him, and began to sing again, quietly, as his hands continued to move through Squalo’s hair. It wasn’t long before Squalo’s breathing evened out and he fell asleep, Dino singing until he himself fell asleep.

It was the last time that Squalo’s insomnia plagued him when he was Dino.
