Summary: Chrome keeps going missing.
Tsuna hadn’t been very concerned when Chrome began to disappear every day at the same time, twice a day. There had been times that she had disappeared for days at a time, so when she would come back after an hour of her morning and afternoon vanishings, he was relieved. For some reason, he found that, recently, he had wanted her closer than ever before. He didn’t have any problem with her disappearances (though that wasn’t entirely true, he was always concerned when his Guardians were gone for long periods of time - including Hibari, who was constantly missing), but after a while, he became curious. When Chrome came back from her jaunts, she was much happier than she had been before she left, a small, nearly impossible to see smile on her lips and a slight flush on her cheeks.
He couldn’t explain when that made him slightly jealous. If Chrome had found someone and was happy, that was a good thing, right? Even as his head rationally told him yes, his heart had something different in mind. He wanted to know where she went, and he said as much to Mukuro when it was his turn to report to him. The slightly older man had quirked an eyebrow and didn’t seem entirely surprised by the question.
“Kufufu~, are you sure that you want the answer to that question, Sawada Tsunayoshi? What if she has found someone to keep her warm during cold, lonely nights?” Mukuro asked, a smug, secretive smile gracing his lips.
Tsuna barely thought about it before he answered, “Yes, I want to know.” Mukuro’s smile widened and there was a hint of mischievousness twinkling in his eyes. Tsuna was suddenly very nervous, knowing that the look Mukuro had did not bode well for him. He cleared his throat and kept his eyes on Mukuro.
“Well?”
“Perhaps you should take a walk, Tsunayoshi. I hear that the gardens on the far side of the estate are very nice this time of day.” Tsuna blinked at Mukuro as he stood, though he wasn’t surprised with the cryptic statement. He was surprised that Mukuro was actually helping him.
“Maybe I will.”

It wasn’t until the next day that Tsuna was able to put his plan into motion. After Chrome had left, Tsuna waited a few moments before following her. He had gotten better at being stealthy (no thanks to Gokudera’s lessons), hanging behind just enough so he wouldn’t be seen. Every so often, he would duck behind a tree or a bush (like Reborn had taught him) to watch her.
It wasn’t long before she stopped, right in the middle of the path in the far gardens. She squatted down, her hand going out to pet something softly. His brow furrowed as he watched her, but his lips twitched into a grin as he heard her giggle softly. When he heard his name though, he couldn’t maintain his silence.
“Chrome?” he said softly, moving closer to her. She started, looking behind her. In her lap sat a tiny, orange kitten, with a lot of fur on his head and neck.
“B-Boss, I…” she started. She looked surprised when he squatted down next to her, reaching over to pet the small cat. The cat purred under his attentions, leaning into and nuzzling his hand. The small smile that she gave made Tsuna’s heart flutter a little.
“Have you been coming out here to see this kitten?” he asked her. She nodded at him, her hand resting gently on the cat’s back.
“This one looks like you.” Tsuna blinked at the odd response. He actually hadn’t expected her to say anything at all.
“But…why does that matter?”
“It matters because…I like Boss.” He looked up sharply, blinking. He knew what she meant, and it made him both nervous and giddy.
“So…you took care of a cat?” She nodded. “Why?”
“Because I couldn’t take care of Boss.” He was surprised by the answer. Of all the things she could have said, that was the last thing he expected. As the words sunk in, he smiled slowly.
“You can always take care of me, Chrome. And I wouldn’t mind if you kept the cat.” This time, it was her turn to be surprised before she looked down, flushing.
“Thank you, Boss.” They became quiet as they pet the cat, both smiling at the way it seemed to revel in their attentions. Though there was still much to talk about - their feelings, what to do - for now, they were happy to share this quiet moment. There was time for change later.
