The first time that Lal saw Luce, she didn’t think much of her. She was small and delicate, didn’t have any special skills that she could see. Yes, she was a mob boss, but only of a small family without any real standing. She didn’t understand how she could be included in the seven strongest people in the world. That was true of Skull as well, but at least he had some kind of physical skill that could be of use. Luce wasn’t a fighter. She was everything that Lal despised about women, weak and dependent on a man to protect her.

Until the way she saw her handle Reborn. Oh, she didn’t yell or scream at him, hit him, nothing of the sort. She just looked at him after he had teased Skull, and his shoulders hunched and he was unable to look her in the eye. To push Reborn to that…Lal wondered just what Luce was truly hiding.

She watched her when she thought when she wasn’t looking, observing the way she treated the other chosen. Luce treated them all differently, and yet they were all equals to her. She treated Reborn and Skull as her children - scolding Reborn when he would tease and torment Skull, coddling Skull when he felt alone and lonely. When Mammon or Verde were off in their own worlds, quiet and anti-social, she would be the only one to attempt, and succeed, in making them talk to her. Fong and her would sit, observing the others as they sipped tea. They always seemed to be smiling at their own private joke.

And then there was Lal. She wasn’t quite sure just how she fit into all of this. Yes, they spoke, but it was rare and far between that she did. Why it bothered her so much, she wasn’t quite sure. But she would find herself watching Luce as she interacted with the others, watched her walk around with a grace unseen in most people, let alone someone so pregnant. She seemed to glide, and she wondered just how she learned that.

To Lal, Luce was the ultimate mystery. Delicate and sweet, soft in her way and yet, there was something in her eyes that was...Lal wasn’t sure what it was. There were times that she would turn that knowing gaze on her and smile, eyes crinkling at the corners, as if there was some secret that only she and Lal knew. Lal’s lips would always quirk into a half smile before she caught herself and looked away.

She never understood why that smile she gave made her stomach flutter and jitter, why it made set a little tremble in her hand or a hitch in her breath. She didn’t much want to explore it either. If she just ignored it, then maybe…

“Cookie?” A soft voice asked at her elbow. She glanced up and had to stop herself from placing a hand over her chest where her heart gave a sharp thud. It didn’t make sense, she wasn’t scared (not that she would admit it anyway). She looked at the tray that Luce held, surprised at the gesture. She was about to say no, but changed her mind.

“Why not?” She took a cookie, not biting into it as she looked around the room. She caught sight of Reborn and, oddly enough, Viper picking on Skull, taking turns to see what they could get from him. “They seem to be having fun.” At her sigh, Lal looked up to see her shaking her head. There was something…cute about that way she did it, as if it was the last straw for a long suffering mother, and it brought a small smile to her face.

“If I’ve told them once, I’ve told them a thousand times not to pick on him.” Lal just nodded, going quiet as she thought to herself. She really had no interest in the three in the corner. Her only interest was the woman who stood next to her. “Luce…”

“It’s nice, not being the only one, isn’t it? It’s nice to have someone like you to talk to.” Lal blinked at the sudden question. She hadn’t thought about it before, nor did she really care to think about it. But when she looked up, Lal was looking at her expectantly, a hand rubbing over her swollen belly and she couldn’t tell her that.

“Yeah, I guess it is.”

“As wonderful as they are…they don’t understand the same.” Lal knew that she was speaking of the men that surrounded them and she nodded. “I like talking with you. I like being your friend, Lal.” Lal jerked a little at that and she knew that Luce knew. She didn’t know how she did, but she did.

“…I like being your friend too, Luce.” She stood up, unable to meet her gaze. “I need some fresh air.” Luce placed a hand on her arm, her eyes sympathetic.

“Lal…”

“Please, Luce. Let me go.” The woman watched her for a moment before dropping her hand and nodding. As Lal walked off, she realized that this, letting go of Luce, would be so much easier if she wasn’t everything that she valued in a person.
