So basically to recap:
- We spend 7 seasons building a character that, yes, has her flaws but is fundamentally a strong leader; someone just and fair, even if far from perfect (because the "accept me or die" is not exactly perfection, is it? Still who in the hell IS perfect?); someone who came into cities, overthrew tyrants, and freed slaves; someone who literally walked into fire and came out stronger - and with dragons. We spend 7 seasons building a Queen and then what? We get bored? We realize we have a man who could sit on the Iron Throne so the woman needs to be destroyed?
- Daenarys Targaryen had a monumental character arc: from abused little girl sold to a man by her deranged brother to Queen with a devoted, enormous, following. But then whoooops! You know what, Jon Snow is actually a Targaryen too! Quick, quick! Let's ruin Dany's character! A man can rule now!!!!
- A woman, any woman, apparently can't do much else than be ruled by her emotions, can she? Dany can't be a good leader because she wants revenge too much and Jon hurt her little feelings so she burns an entire city full of innocents; Brienne of Tarth, the purest heart in the show, is reduced to beg a man who's only capable of loving his sister not to leave her, and after becoming a knight and proving how strong she is... she's left kneeling in the snow, crying.
- Sansa Stark tells Tyrion Lannister that she wouldn't have become as strong as she is now if she hadn't lived through all that happened to her... namely, all sorts of abuse and rape. Because of course a woman has to be a rape survivor in order to have any sort of development. She needs to be abused or she can't mature. Makes total sense.
- Missandei, a slave who became best friend with the Queen who freed her and who found love after having suffered more than imaginable, is killed to further the "let's ruin Dany's character" plot. Because wasting time building the downfall of a leader isn't necessary when you can kill her best friend and let emotion rule her head. I'm amazed they didn't decide to show that Dany was PMSing too! Maybe she was, hey! Maybe that's why she burned innocents alive!
- Cersei Lannister, the real bad one, otoh gets to die held in the loving arms of the love of her life: her brother. Arya doesn't kill her like she's wanted to do for at least 5 seasons, Jamie doesn't fulfill the prophecy and doesn't kill her (and he actually did leave Brienne to die with Cersei...). Not even Dany kills her! Nope. She hugs Jamie and a ceiling collapses on them. Wow.
- Oh and while we're at it and Dany is letting Drogon have his fun on King's Landing, Dothraki and Northeners alike take their time raping random women because character development can be either disregarded or deemed irrelevant to show, but we always have time for rape!
I had such high hopes for this season. The last one was pretty good, and the first 3 episodes of the current season were wonderful. I've said, and will forever maintain, that episode 8x02 is the best episode of the entire series; and 8x03 kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Then came 8x04 and 8x05, and I wish I'd stopped watching after Arya killed the Night King. Gah, I should've sided with the White Walkers!!
I'm not looking forward to the finale at all. I haven't read spoilers for it but I know I'm gonna hate it with a passion. Maybe, if I'm lucky, I won't hate it and I'll just be severely disappointed. Maybe.
Thanks for nothing, Game of Thrones. Here's hoping the Emmys this year will completely snub you.
Not tagging this post with anything other than the GoT tag, and using a random mood and icon, because everything could be considered spoiler and I'd hate to ruin things for someone.
