Summary: Up in the bell tower, high above the town, one lone boy rang the bells. One lone boy watched those who passed by on the streets below. One lone boy fell in love with another boy whose smile lit up his dark world
Warm, golden sunlight streamed through the window as Minho looked out over the horizon, his mind deep in thought. Wasn't it only a few weeks ago that he watched Taemin pass under that very spot? Wasn't it only a short while ago that Minho was invisible to all the world and only watched? It felt so surreal that he was now practially intergrated into Taemin's life. He met his family and learned so much about the boy that he felt they practically grew up together.
When Minho woke up earlier that morning to find Taemin sleeping with his head on top of Minho's arm and his arms curled inbetween them, fingers wrapped around the older boy's shirt, the bell keeper found it extremely hard to pull away. Taemin looked so peaceful while he slept and it made Minho smile, but it was nearing time for him to leave to go to tend to the bells. He had pulled away slowly, reaching over and gently smoothing away the creases that formed on Taemin's face as he felt the warmth slowly escape him. "I'll see you later Taemin-ah..." Minho whispered softly and the boy relaxed entirely, his face going back to the worriless state from before.
Minho snuck out and back to his bell tower to ring the early morning bells. The bell keeper briefly wondered when and if his father would return to see him. The old man had been away on a 'trip' for a few months now and for all Minho knew, he could have died. No one really knew that he was the old man's son anyway and it made him feel somewhat abandoned. No one really seemed to care about the bell keeper... except for Taemin and his weird interest in the bells in the first place. That thought alone gave Minho enough reason to smile.
Taemin was quickly becoming more and more important to him. The small admiration he had for the boy before was growing into something much more and it frightened him somewhat. He didn't know what it meant or what to do, but he had the unexplainable desire to be as close as humanly possible to Taemin. It troubled him and made him think for several hours everyday about what it could possibly mean. He had read books with emotions that were similar to his own, but they were between a man and a woman... but maybe it was possible between two males?
Minho was so deep in thought, his brain sifting through so many emotions, that he failed to notice the shock of auburn hair making its way towards his tower door. Taemin had grown lonely at home, tired of the constant love triangle between his hyungs. He never knew which one Key would eventually fall for, but he knew that it was going to happen soon and one of his hyungs was going to be heart broken. He just hoped it wouldn't tear apart their friendship, but he had the feeling it wouldn't.
Taemin walked into the bell tower, toeing off his shoes, carefully carrying a small white box in his hands. He went to the small kitchen that the tower housed on its lower level along with bathroom and small den area that only had a couch and coffee table. Minho's living was truly sparse and Taemin was fairly certain he would go crazy in such simple living conditions. But after he went to the kitchen, he grabbed a couple of plates and two eating utensils before walking back towards the stairs, heading up to the top of the bell tower to see Minho, balancing everything as carefully.
As he opened the door and walked in, smiling as he saw Minho at the window, looking out over the horizon. There was something about the way the tall figure leaning against the window sill, bathed in the warm glow of the afternoon sunlight that made Taemin pause, appreciating just how attractive Minho really was. A rush of nerves washed over him and he nearly dropped the things he was carrying as he just looked at Minho. Taemin didn't know what he was feeling, but he knew that whatever it was, it felt right.
Slowly, the boy made his way over to the small desk in the room, setting down the plates silently. The floor boards creaked softly under his feet, causing Minho to glance over and a smile formed on his lips. The thought of Taemin trying to sneak up on him and obviously surprise him with a snack made him happy. So instead of ruining it for the younger boy, he simply kept looking out of the window, letting the rustling sound go unnoticed. The soft scrape of the untesils against the bottom of the plastic container Taemin had carried in and then on the ceramic of the plates let Minho know that the boy indeed brought food for them. He briefly wondered what Key made before he heard the soft footsteps of Taemin approaching him.
A small plate with six sweet rice balls with three different coatings appeared in front of Minho's face and he smiled, standing up into a better position and taking the plate from Taemin's hands. "Did Key-hyung make these?" he bowed his head in thanks, silently picking up his chop sticks to guide one of the small molded balls towards his mouth. It was sweet and light, making him smile in appreciation. It wasn't often Minho got such treats, but he loved them.
"Key-umma didn't make them... I did..." Taemin flushed, looking slightly embarrassed as he ate his own cinnamon coated treat. The boy was proud that he knew how to make something himself, but when Minho gave him such a suprised look, it made him avert his gaze. "Are they good hyung?" he asked after he swallowed, and returned his gaze to the other male who was already lifting a third one to his mouth.
Minho paused, smiling in shame at his eagerness to scarf down his dessert. "They're amazing Taemin-ah... you did really well when you made these." His voice held no lie as he popped the third sweet rice ball in he mouth, smiling widely as he munched on it with vigor.
"Oh... well they're simple to make. I could teach you sometime. It really doesn't take much, even Jonghyun could make them if wanted to." Taemin smiled shyly at the compliment, ducking his head again as he tried to ignore the assault of nerves on his stomach. It just seemed that every time his hyung smiled at him or gave him a compliment, his entire body felt the need to blush and turn shy immediately. "But... he'd get Key to do it because he loves having Key take care of him."
A silence hung in the air between them as they continued to eat. It wasn't awkward or tense. It was comfortable and soothing, listening to one another make little sounds as they ate, glancing at one another through their lashes and feeling their breaths catch. It was as if the tiny strands of their restraints were snapping one by one with each little look. By the time they finished the light snack, and Taemin took the plates and set them on the floor next to them, they were on the edge of doing something they could possibly regret later.
All it took was one last glance, one meeting of their eyes and the show of a soft, pink tongue darting out of the maknae's mouth to lick a bit of seasoning of his lip to break all of their self-control. Minho moved forward and leaned down as Taemin tilted his head up and they met in the middle, their noses bumping and lips brushing chastely for a moment. A sound of pain emitted from both boys for a moment as they pulled back, touching their noses in annoyance.
Taemin looked up with slightly watery eyes that made Minho forget his own pain for the moment and reach forward to lightly cup his dongsaeng's cheek in his hand. He soothingly ran the pad of his thumb over the boy's jawline before he slowly pulled him forward, tilting his head to the side as their lips met in a closed mouthed kiss. A jolt of electricity passed through both of them as they pressed their lips together, moving them slowly. When the need to breath surpassed the want to stay in place, Taemin pulled back, panting slightly as his hands gripped the front of Minho's shirt, a smile spreading over his features. It may have been his first kiss, but he enjoyed it greatly.
When Taemin opened his eyes and met Minho's gaze shyly, he found himself blushing and biting his lip before their mouths met again and his eyes felt shut once more. The kiss was slow and tantalizing, their instincts taking over for the moment. Minho was the first to open his mouth, lightly nipping on Taemin's bottom lip to taste him (if only just a little), but he was pleasantly surprised when the younger male opened his mouth slightly to let their tongues meet for the first time. They danced slowly in a fight for dominance before Taemin submitted, moaning softly into his hyung's mouth as he pressed his chest against Minho's and wrapped his arms around his neck to hold him in place.
But the moment was ended when Taemin's phone began to vibrate and sing out from his back pocket. The ringtone belonged to Key, which meant he probably needed to head home soon. Taemin pouted, pulling back and he reached in his back pocket to answer the phone. His predictions were correct and he had to leave since he had school the next day. After he hung up, he gave Minho a soft, sad smile. "I'll see you tomorrow?" he asked shyly, a blush painting his cheeks.
Minho smiled, lightly brushing a piece of hair out of his face, nodding. "Of course... I'll see you tomorrow." He leaned forward, kissing Taemin's cheek before letting the boy leave with much reluctancy. When Taemin was gone, Minho looked at the clock and nearly felt his heart stop. He had forgotten to toll the bells by five minutes and he rushed over to the lever and pulled it, hoping that no one in town noticed.
