Not excusing the erasure of aromantics, but I think part of the emphasis people often place on the ace romantic-spectrum is that people have a hard time getting their heads around it. Possibly because for many people, they feel that romantic feelings must lead to sexual desire, or sexual desire should lead to romantic feelings, or believe that both occur concurrently.
Therefore, if someone claims to be ace but has had boyfriends or girlfriends, people rebut with "Oh yeah? How about So-and-So? You dated them." So they'll emphasize the possibility of being both romantic and ace.
But yeah, aromanticism should definitely be given more screen time.
