[ This guy has no idea how to cook for himself. He has been exploring the vast realms of pb&j, cold cut sandwiches and on one occasion dabbling with the sophisticated grilled cheese sandwich.

He burned it.

He has no idea what holiday it is and maybe he should if he's thinking about eating food made for it but--he just wants to eat something that's not a sandwich. So it doesn't take long for him to make up his mind and stroll into the kitchen. ]

Thanks, Nakama. [ He can at least be polite before digging into something for a holiday he doesn't care about. ...But wait. ] ...Is everyone supposed to do gifts? [ Is he going to be obligated to do something for the whole house himself if he partakes 8|;;;; ]

No, no! [She smiles, waving off his concern.] It was just something I wanted to do for everyone. It's not about repaying, it's just about giving if you want to give.

[ Oh okay. He wouldn't have qualms about repaying Nakama but there are a lot of clowns in this whole place. Him included. He's not making nice because of a holiday. Speaking of which-- ]

What's this holiday?

It's called Christmas. It's a time when you get together with people you love, either your family or a special person, and exchange gifts and spend time together. You don't have it where you're from...?

[ He shrugs. ] Different worlds, different people. We've got something similar though. Maybe it's got something to do with the time of year...

[ Now, this is a hearty plate. Time to find a chair; he puts himself down pretty close to everything while there's still not too many people, though he's careful not to mess up Nakama's place settings.

Really? What's it called?

[Then she realizes that he's about to eat, and raises her hands as though to wave the words out of the air.]

[ Blink. Nakama, you're a weird girl... ]

It's just a solstice holiday. [ He's from a world where the names of towns have been wiped out of public memory incredibly quickly by Shinra's expansion. Churches fell out of use much the same. Shinra might put up lights every year for the display of feel-good, but the actual religious holiday? Pretty well faded into obscurity, at least for Cloud.

...Scrambled eggs, so fluffy and warm. It's almost hilarious how this guy's face lights up when he bites in. ]

[She tries not to hover while he's eating, but she does glance back in time to see that gleeful face, and a breath she didn't even know she was holding in rushes out of her. It's okay. Have a bright, genuine smile, Cloud.]

[ What... what is she smiling at him for. Once he notices her attention on him, the briefly-open face closes again, his start fading into a more neutral expression.

Though since she's looking back at him-- ] It's not bad. [ ...don't go overboard on the compliments, Cloud. ] You usually cook for yourself?

Myself, and my mom sometimes. I didn't know if it would be any good when I had to focus on so many different things at once... I'm glad you like it.

[ His mom had always been the cook of their tiny household...though he tries not to think about that too much. He hadn't known how. Still doesn't.

... ... ... ]

Are you going to make more?

[ He could watch. Quietly. He won't have money to eat out until he gets a job--he's supposed to be saving that anyway--and he's sick of sandwiches. ]

If more people show up, I'll make enough for everyone.

[Judging by how gleefully he was eating before, she picks up on a bit of his lack of knowledge, and she offers shyly:]

Do... you need someone to teach you how to cook?

That's not... ... [ Though he doesn't really have a good excuse for wanting her to make more, what with all the food still prepared, and he flushes and stumbles. Tongue-tied. Way to blow being a cool merc. ] It was never something I needed to know before.

That's fair enough. There's a lot of people who don't know how to cook here. Once you know the basics, you just have to follow recipes and it's not that hard. There are lots of recipe books in the library.

[Smiling her 'I will help you or die trying' smile.] It's no problem to just get you started sometime.

[ Uuugh it's like his stomach is nibbling at his pride. Must be revenge for all the sandwiches. ] I'll pay you back somehow.

It's really not necessary. I like helping people out - it's only right to share skills you have with people who don't have them, after all.
