[ Cloud's not looking at the video when it starts, instead focused on a nail that he strikes with a hammer. He glances at the video, confirming it's on, but he seems distracted or restless. ] Vincent. You're about the only one who'd stay quiet for long. If you're here, say something. [ Pound. Pound. Pound. .... ] Or...if any Houses have a ( Read more... )

There's no such person in House Odin, I'm afraid.

[He regards the bat thoughtfully.] I believe weapons can be purchased in the city, but you'll need to find employment to make money to afford them.

You're used to combat situations, I take it?

Hmmm... [ Was Vincent likely to have shown up in Odin? He did seem pretty smart, but not exactly the riddle type. Even if he did talk funny sometimes. ] All right, thanks anyway.

[ He could also break in to steal them, and is idly contemplating the appeal of that plan, but... he's not about to announce that over a network. ]

Plenty. I joined the military when I was fourteen and worked my way up. Quit that, took jobs as a mercenary.

You're welcome. If there are people you're looking for, they may yet appear. [The arrivals have tapered off, but he's not sure if or when the "gods" will stop bringing in new people.]

[Fourteen? That seems incredibly young, but he's not going to comment on it, as they all come from different worlds with different mores.]

I see. Would you be interested in using your skills here?

I know. [ But it's been nearly a week since he got here. There's no way he can sit still about this. ]

I would be, for the right price. [ Or a cute girl in trouble, but Yuri doesn't have the doe eyes for that. ]

[He nods. He doesn't particularly respect those who act solely for money (even worse than Heroes), but there's no visible sign of that disapproval.]

As there's no justice system here, some of us are trying to start one, in order to protect the populace from harm. To do that, we'll need a police force or guard of sorts.

We've only just arrived, so there's little money involved so far, but there is likely to be greater payment in the future.

[ What. ]

I'm not-- [ stayin' here that long. ] ...Are you serious?

[ Snappy retort derailed by the fact that someone here is trying to set up--what, wouldn't that be a government? And he, the merc-turned-ecoterrorist, just got asked for it.

His mouth is still line-face but that is a very quizzical quirk of the eyebrows over the video. ]

I'm quite serious. [He doesn't have the air of a man who makes jokes.]

Someone with military experience might be useful. I won't accept just anyone, as I want to avoid corruption, but I thought I would gauge your interest, considering your expertise.

[He's used to working with and utilizing the skills of a variety of people, some of whom he agrees with, but most of whom he doesn't. It's important to him to establish a justice system; the disorder here agitates him.]

You think the gods won't have anything to say about "justice" here? [ Either enforcing their own, or getting pissy about someone else trying to. ]

If they cared about justice here, they would have a justice system of some kind in place, but they do not. [If the gods wish to take issue with him, so be it.]

Unfortunately, I think this is the kind of endeavor they might even approve of, as they wish us to "flourish". I do oppose them on principle, but I can't stand idly by when there is nothing in place to protect the citizens from harm. [He's not able to protect them himself, as Lunatic, so he will do what he must.]

...That's right, you made that post... [ He's thought about it, then. Cloud can at least get behind sticking it to the gods--though his version of sticking it usually means actual pointy objects.

And there are kids and teenagers here. Conan, Naminé, Nakama... wouldn't some kind of order help them keep safe? When all kinds are being brought in... ]

...It sounds nice. But I don't think anyone here could screen all the bad guys out. [ And once it gets corrupt, well, Cloud has Shinra as a shiny example of that. ]

Yes, I did mention it on the network.

Of course not. No human institution is perfect, and problems do arise. I'm a judge at home. We do sometimes have to deal with corruption in the system, but when we find it, it is rooted out. [He would prefer to burn out such evil, but other ways do work as well, though they are not so pure and final.]

The possibility of a problem arising is no reason not to attempt to better society.

[ Flat: ] Lucky for your world. Not everyone's had the same experience. [ Far, far from it... There's a reason he quit the military, after all. ]

...I'll keep an eye out for your "system"--if we're here that long. But I can do something on my own, too. Think I prefer it that way. [ This isn't a society, anyway--not to Cloud. Even if he thinks of a few kids... his priority is on getting out. ]

I'm aware of that fact. Circumstances vary from era to era and region to region. We recently overthrew a corrupt regime of sorts. It took time, but corruption will bear its bitter fruit in the end. [There is always more corruption to burn out. That is his task.]

As you like. Some are more suited to working alone. But if you work for justice, you will have my support, if you need it.

[ So far Cloud's just seeing everyone else get the "bitter fruit". But--Yuri's taking rejection civilly, which is certainly a step up from how Cloud's seen anyone else in a suit take it. (It'd help if he knew Reeve.)

Working alone... Yeah. That's him, lone mercenary-for-hire. Ending up with AVALANCHE was just chance. ] I'll keep it in mind.

[ He reaches to shut off the bracelet and get back to working on the half-finished nail bat. Right now, it's not justice he needs. ]
