Last time.
This time he lowered the gun from his friends head and spun around to face Holloway. “Unless, double jumping works.”
Holloway looked at James confused. Dylan was starting to understand.
“Confused?” James asked Holloway. “It’s alright you worthless piece of shit I will explain it, and slowly so you understand how fucked you are. You see if double jumping works, then this would have already happened and there would be a gap between now in this line and now in TL1. Are you following with me?”
“James now listen to me…” Holloway began but was interrupted by James firing his gun into the air.
“Sorry to interrupt you but it is my turn to speak. You see if there is a gap, that means this has already happened, ok stick with me, which means that you, are a shadow.”
Fear appeared in Holloways eyes.
“If you are a shadow, then I can shoot you in the stomach.” James pulled the trigger doing exactly what he just described. Holloway fell to the ground in excruciating pain. The contrast of the bright red blood flowing over his clean white suit put punctuated the severity of his injury. “And I wouldn’t have to worry about any consequences.”
Holloway gripped his bleeding stomach and propped himself up against the wall. “Fine if, what you are saying is true kill me, I am just a shadow.”
“You know Holloway I wrote the book on lying, and you are terrible at it.”
“Fuck you.”
“See, you don’t want to die either. Maybe you were wrong about this whole shadow thing.” James walked over to Holloway and crouched in front of him. “I mean you feel fear, right? You feel pain, right?” He shoved his gun into the bullet wound he created moments earlier and Holloway shouted out in pain. “But you are just a shadow, a reflection. Doesn’t add up, does it?”
“It doesn’t matter, as soon as you double jump back then we are going to end this fucking place. You won’t be able to talk me out of it.”
“You’re right.”
“So this is all for nothing.” James said slowly blinking beginning to lose hold of his consciousness.
“Unless, I take the catalyst with me, see if I were to do that when I go back you would activate the catalyst and it would just spray in my pocket. Per the usual procedure the files on this time line would be destroyed and no one would know it exists.”
“What do you think I am an idiot, of course I would check you for that kind of thing.”
“See you are an idiot, because you don’t.”
Holloway realized that now he was truly fucked. He opened his mouth to scream but it was muffled because James but his gun in it.
“I’m sorry to interrupt but it’s the guns turn to speak.” James said and pulled the trigger ending his bosses’ life.
James approached his friend and unhand cuffed him. He also helped him to his feet.
“I really thought you were going to kill me.” Dylan said
“I did, last time.” James retorted.
Dylan was staring at his friend, trying to piece everything together. If what James said was true then he would have had to of double jumped when he first entered this time line twenty years ago. He would have had to relive all of those twenty years and these last few days exactly as he had before to make sure everything lined up identical. All of this so when the choice came up again to choose is own life or his friends he could make the right decision. Dylan was appalled that he had killed him but overwhelmed at the sacrifice it took to right his decision. It also meant he risked doing a double jump with no idea of the outcome.
“So all of this has already happened, all of this was you trying to fix what you fucked up.”
“Yeah don’t you remember what I first asked you to help me with?”
Dylan thought hard, it seemed so long ago but suddenly the word jumped back into his head. “Redemption, you scheming bastard.”
“I told you, you could trust me.”
“Yeah unless it was the me the first time around.”
“What makes you think I wasn’t planning this from then, do you really think I would allow myself to get mugged and have my tooth ripped out?”
“Whatever, I really don’t think my mind can handle anymore time travel puzzles.”
“Besides, now I have this.” He said as he pulled the ring from his dead bosses’ finger. “This will allow us to travel back and fourth through time lines.”
“Us?” Dylan asked inquisitively.
“Yeah there are a lot of damaged time lines out there that need to be healed. It’s too big of a task to handle on my own.”
Dylan smiled. He was a scheming bastard, but he was a smart scheming bastard.
“You can’t print that story; it will send up red flags and ruin everything. Besides that’s just the first chapter, believe me there is a lot more to add to that story.”
“Fair enough, count me in, what’s next?”
“First I got to go back; I need to see this through and right another wrong, but don’t be surprised if you get a call from a dead friend soon.”
Dylan laughed. “I am looking forward to it.”
“The lobsters were new; we didn’t do that last time.” James said
Dylan laughed. “Awesome.” James started playing with the ring and Dylan assumed he was about to leave. “James.” Dylan said stopping his friend.
“Thank you.”
James smiled and looked his friend in the eye. “Any time.”
The End… Again
Epilogue.
James and Holloway stood in front of a control panel. Holloway looked up to James who looked broken, his head was hanging and his hands were in his pockets.
“You made the right decision James, I am glad to have you back.” Holloway said and pressed the button which activated Plan B. Holloway held out his hand to shake James’s hand.
James pulled his hand out of his pocket wiped if off on the back of his pants and shook his bosses hand.
