I like this post. :) And agreed. Especially this part:
I love the relationships between friends that are as close as family. I love teams and partnerships and their dynamics and what make them work.
So many fics - and original stories - fail to show this. They have what are supposed to be family-like friends and strong teams, but it won't be executed well. I've watched shows or read books or fics with "close" friends in them, and have wondered why I'm supposed to believe they like each other, let alone have a special bond.
Backstory is fun because that allows you to speculate, via fic, what makes that character tick. As long as it's well executed, often it isn't, but I've more often been pleasantly surprised.
