Now I just have to do it. My mentor wrote back, sent me some good thoughts. I’ve got to work through a bunch more.
“Okay, where to start.
I read your email a couple times to really digest your thoughts. It was evident that you did some processing while writing the email. Here's what stood out to me. It really seems to me that you want more out of life. Your living environment is not what you really want, you want a different pool of ladies to get to know, and most importantly you want a job where you can see the impact of your handwork. I wonder if you are just at that point in your life when you need a change. Maybe life is too predictable at the moment for you.
I loved your "ideal world" paragraph. It is possible for you to have all of that. You just need to position yourself to get it all. It appears to me that you know that your current job, town, etc. are not positioning you to get what you really want out life. Now the hard work begins - you need to take action and change what you don't like!
If through this process you have learned that you want a position in Orientation, then start applying! There is no reason to delay. If that is what is going to make you happy, then do what you need to. Your past in orientation is your past. You are a different person today. You are not the person that arrived at and left Purdue. Don't let that experience define who you are. You are better than that and there are college students out there that will benefit from your passion and support. Why deny them an opportunity to be supported.
You can start down a new life path while still living your current life. I remember waiting 5 months before I could start grad school. I hated my job but I knew it would all be over soon. You just need to figure out your first step to meeting your life goals. Maybe that is a move, maybe that is searching for a new job. The best part of it, is you get to decide.
It is okay that you are not happy with your life at the moment. What will define you now is what you do with that information. Do you stay in your current situation hoping it will change, or do you start taking action and define your life the way you'd want it to be?
Sure you need a job so you can pay bills. Im not suggesting you quit your job, just find a new one when the time is right. Take small steps and before you know it, you will have reached your goals and your new life will have begun.
Hollie- here is the tough love piece- you don't need to be afraid. Give yourself more credit. You are strong enough to start down a new path. Have faith that deep down you know what you want out of life. Risk a little so you can succeed. Don't let someone define who you are and your worth!!!!!! You have more to offer than you ever give yourself credit for.
Life starts today, how are you going to live it? I look forward to hearing your response!”
