memory is Hell (a museum)

Someone asked me if I joined in the Hispanic-American Immigration walk-outs/marches of the past few weeks, being that I'm Mexican and darkly so. Did I feel any obligation to attend? Nope, not at all, I'm no copper ingot. I was there at the very first rally downtown, not totally, I was merely there. I woke up that morning in a mood to go swimming, ( Read more... )

I've always had a thing for dark-skinned Mexicans. Is this wrong?

It's really difficult to leave you a well-conceived comment in return, Luis. Most of what you say, even if it needs to be re-read multiple times to sort through the allusions and metaphor, cross-references to other pinpoints in time on the internet, and your apropos literary mentions, is so incisive as to be non-arguable.

I am a slow typist, so I do not usually have the luxury of length when commenting in this light-speed medium. Your wit is a seldom seen flummox for me, as I can smack the most mealy-mouthed with a one sentence back-hand, but you, you are impossible to pin down, but through lengthy, well thought argument. It's spring, and thinking about your intellect makes me want to compare you to the grand symbolism of cherry blossoms in Bushido culture. They are a simple thing of great power.

Perhaps we cannot get into rhythm because I lack your grace. Long ago, I assumed you to be a pretentious cad, but I was wrong.

You sorta...confuse me I guess? I confess I don't know how to take you. I know you weren't speaking directly toards me, but if I compliment you after a comment, it is because I find you truly interesting, and this I have told you from the get-go I do believe. That comment you linked to in this post is definitely one of the best I've received, and in a different ball park than Mengus's ego boosting comment I spoke of.

I'm actually surprised that I was name-dropped, but pleased to see that it was in the same breath as oh_the_ironing

indulging myself in chicano discourse wednesdayketchp May 1 2006, 19:51:38 UTC
the term 'hispanic-american' is not politically correct. many mexicans are not of spanish origin and are therefore not 'hispanic' or 'latino'. they are indigenous mexicans. im surprised that you'd use such a term anyway- you are far from being a guero. you are chicano, mexicano, Meshika, descended from cuauhtemok.

you better check yourself.

You're right of course. In all honesty, I didn't think twice about using that term, because I figured that everyone reading would instantly know what I was talking about. I thought I made it clear that I wasn't very adept at politics, but I should have included the use of politically correct terminology. I've never taken a Mexican studies class, or anything of the sort, just like I've never taken a philosophy course, excluding philosophy of religion, so I make tasteless mistakes on a regular basis. For example, a few weeks ago, I was illustrating the principles of George Berkeley, by way of proper example, for a snobby Argentine girl, and she had the nerve to interrupt me, quite forcefully, to correct my pronunciation of his name. Apparently, it's critical to communicate the nuance of an a sound, as in Barclay, or you risk invalidating whatever it is you're trying to say about the man. I'd only ever seen his name in text, and I know him like the back of my hand, but inconsequential items such as these will distract those who are ( ... )

For a span of about three days I actually thought orphieux was some mysterious friend of yours, a sycophant student voluntarily shackled to your literary whims.

You must not know me. I would provide very regular accomodations for students.

In the past three days I've revealed myself on AIM, as it were, exclusively in the hopes that you would talk to me. As a result of becoming "available," I was bombarded with instant messages. Last night I got about 10 in the space of 5 minutes, I was in the midst of fending them off when you LOGGED OFF ON ME. I opened myself to the wolves for NAUGHT!
