I consider myself a socialist, but I find some of the news coming out of Venezuela very discouraging. Police acting 'without orders' to intimidate and suppress minority groups. Separate non-military armed forces aligned directly with the Chavez government as well as vigilantes who threaten 'problem communities' with low support for the government, and kill outspoken dissidents. That and Chavez trying to pass (and narrowly getting shot down on) constitutional amendments to allow him to run for president indefinitely instead of two consecutive terms like in the US, along with other direct boosts of power for the president's authority.
I liked Chavez at first when I heard about the US backed coup a few years ago, but from the sound of it what's happening there is more along the lines of National Socialism.
