Some nights he dreams of her burning.
After a mission has gone wrong and another handful, or five, has to be added to the casualty list of the day; filled with names, planetary locations, and relatives who will soon receive formal letters and decorated funerals for the loved ones they’ll never see again. All sent out into space with a mutual dream and admiration with the Enterprise as their home, shelter, and new mother keeping them safe from the vacuous void that surrounds them.
Humans are overtly emotional Spock would say, but Jim knows she calls him too, the clean lines, state-of-the-art-equipment and the endless statistical opportunity for discovery, learning and bettering the Vulcan’s understanding of the universe as a whole and the Enterprise gives him that. A beautiful distraction in harder than diamond plating, but like any great woman, and Jim has loved many, not only does she give but she demands respect. Demands that her officers are efficient enough to protect her, that Jim love her like he could never love any other and for her Jim finds himself bending, being consumed, and losing yet gaining everything.
But she is just a ship and the odds prove that one day she will cease to exist.
So every night when he wakes up, barely able to breathe, body tight and defensive, ready to protect something so much bigger than he is, he forces himself to listen with all of his concentration, hear the steady hum of her engines, the slight click of the air filtration system, and the absolute quiet that seems to whisper promises that they’ll all see another day.
It helps that on some of those nights he isn’t alone, able to turn and find the growingly familiar plains of his first officer’s body sleeping impossibly still next to him, this strange new tenet of their increasingly dynamic relationship making something cold within him shift, the fear subside. And on these nights Jim is reminded of what might be the most important lessons the Enterprise has to teach: devotion, compassion and utmost the ability to love fearlessly.
