Drogo had given the order for the witch to be roped and dragged
behind the horses, but Dany stood, one hand resting protectively on her
belly.
"Wait. Please, my sun-and-stars, I was the one that she betrayed. I
gave her my trust. Let me deal with her as my father would have. Let me
show you how we deal justice in the Seven Kingdoms."
They had built a pyre and chained Mirri Maz Durr in the centre. Dany
had moved like a person in a dream. Her eyes were wide and unseeing as
she moved the dragon eggs until they were cradled gently in the wood.
It wasn't until the pyre was well and truly alight that the crackle
of the burning wood and the acrid smoke that stung her eyes brought her
back to herself. There was a scream, and she heard it with ears that
seemed filled with the sound of the flames. The flames left little room
for anything else in any of her senses. The fire filled her world. It
took minutes and the stares of the khalasar for her to realise
that the scream was hers. The woman in the pyre was singed and starting
to burn, but she wasn't screaming, not yet.
The dragon eggs were burning and she couldn't recall why she had put
them in the fire. The scream had made her throat sore and her words were
hoarse. "No... No..." she muttered, but it came out as a croak.
She ran towards the fire, into the fire. Drogo stood, but
was already too far behind to catch her. Ser Jorah Mormont stepped into
her path, but she darted to one side and kept going, pushing away the
arm that reached out for hers.
The khalasar moved as one on the orders of the Khal, beating
the fire down with canvas, with anything to hand. The Khal was already
striding into the embers, batting aside burning logs, as he searched. It
was long minutes before Daenerys walked back out of the flames, her
pale hair singed and short, her clothes almost entirely burned from her
body, but all eyes were on the three dragonets who clambered up her body
and curled around her shoulders.
--------------
It was much later, after she had been scolded by everyone, after she
had learned to feed the dragons, that Drogo finally came to her and they
spoke of the creatures that had been hatched in the fire. He saw no
value to them, that much was clear.
"A Khal needs a horse. A Khal should ride. What use are lizards to a Khal?"
Dany reached up to touch his face. "In my country, it is a sign of a... a Khal."
"A Khal needs no signs."
"My sun-and-stars, they will grow. They will grow as large as ten
horses. They will be like the mightiest horse that the world has ever
seen. They will breathe fire and your son will sit upon one and look
down upon his enemies as they burn."
She saw him try to process this, try to imagine something so alien.
"Keep them. Feed them. I will decide if they are worthy of our son when they grow larger than a horse."
It was enough, for now. She could only pray they would prove their worth with time.
