WTF????
So far as I know, you are young, fit, intelligent, willing, educated, and committed, and have a family tradition of service going back generations. We discussed an army career a year or so ago. On what grounds were you turned down? Too attractive? That's the only one I can imagine. Or else, well, this is the umpteenth confirmation of the old joke that "military intelligence is a contradiction in terms".

(When I was enlisted, I told them that I spoke English, French and German - the languages of our main allies. So they sent me to a mountain garrison where the only person who spoke a foreign language was a fellow-soldier who had been a waiter in London.)

Heh. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Never realized such a diagnosis would screw me over, but...

I didn't realize it would matter for enlisted too. The Naval Academy told me they wouldn't take me for the same reason, but I kind of figured there'd be somewhat different standards. There aren't.

I am still bewildered. Where does PTSD come from? Were you having a particular bad time? You do not strike me as traumatized or agonized - you have had a problem or two, but I do not remember anything that serious.

I was diagnosed with PTSD after 9/11. It got a little worse after we moved back to New York. And if you develop PTSD as a result of being in the military, they'll work harder to keep you in and not medically discharged. But they don't want someone who has it from the beginning.
