The most surprising moment of the debate for me:

Oct 16, 2008 00:10

Obama: ...he was hearing at some of the rallies that your running mate was holding, in which all the Republican reports indicated were shouting, when my name came up, things like "terrorist" and "kill him," and that you're running mate didn't mention, didn't stop, didn't say "Hold on a second, that's kind of out of line."

A good friend of mine from College Democrats & I were talking about this last week. When I heard them start on this topic I frantically texted her to see if she was watching. I kind of couldn't believe they mentioned it on TV, or that McCain had the gall to say what he did and then act all surprised when Obama brought up the fact that some of McCain's supporters were shouting "kill him" at rallies and McCain not only didn't stop them, but laughed.

ALSO HI. I know you've been blogging again for a couple of weeks but school is INSANE so I've been totally ignoring everything LJ. BUT NOW I'M NOT. SO, HI. :D

HI! :) Don't worry, school is insane for me too. And I'm new at it, so I'm all AHHH about it, trying to figure out this midterms BS!

It must be very, very bizarre for Obama to even say that on television though - like, hello, your supporters are shouting at rallies how nice it would be if I was dead. And all McCain had to say was that he's proud of his supporters and can you please criticize John Lewis again?

My uncle is absolutely convinced that Obama will get assassinated if he's elected. He said the only reason he's not going to vote for Obama is because he doesn't want to be "responsible" for his death.

The most surprising thing for me was the Bill Ayers thing. Not from Obama...but because of the fact that McCain just...woudln't let it go.

Well, McCain even said he was going to bring it up (and after Palin said Obama was "palling around with terrorists" how could it not come up?) so I wasn't surprised.

I think the whole Ayers thing is ridiculous though. Wasn't this covered along with the Rev Wright issue during the primary season?

It seems like they just want to be able to use the word "Obama" and "terrorist" in the same sentence to push the scary Arab/Muslim image.

Doesn't a good segment of American academia have ties to Bill Ayers? I know at least one of my professors was on the list of "people supporting terrorists, i.e. Bill Ayers". And I'd at least heard of the Weather Underground, so it couldn't be that small an organization...

...wow.

I suppose there're more articulate reactions to that, but I doubt any express my feelings on the matter remotely better. Seriously - "Kill him!" ? Is it horrible that my first thought isn't, "How could you lack the humanity to stop them," as it's... well, a competition, and political plights feed off this sort of vulgar, rabid propaganda - but what I really want to know is, how could their PR people not have the foresight to counsel them? >_> Or how could they themselves not realize what the gentile strategy was?

It's sad how I no longer treat politicians like real human beings. I blame working for the Politics section of a big newspaper all summer.

I've been reading some news pieces about it this week too, it's really just kind of sickening.

I don't have a problem with wishing Obama is defeated in November, but hoping he is killed is just - it's wrong, end of story. And the proper response to that is not "I'm proud of my supporters" as McCain pretty much said tonight.

McCain couldn't apologize for something he had never heard for the very good reason that it never happened.

Or else, of course, you might say that the Secret Service are corrupt racist hacks in the pay of Karl Rove.... Nothing would surprise me in this election.

Aside from the fact that I can't recall ever expecting Senator McCain to apologize for anything, an article about this coming out on October 16, 17, doesn't necessarily mean that Senator Obama (or rather his debate prep people) knew that the claims were completely unfounded going in to the debate.

Or else, of course, you might say that the Secret Service are corrupt racist hacks in the pay of Karl Rove....

Yes, that's exactly the sort of thing I might say. You've figured it out.

"You" here was meant in the plural. The parallel universe in which many people live is capable of this and more. Ever read the Daily Kos?

I read the Daily Kos just about as often as I check out or Free Republic.
