Going to go out on a limb here and assume that news commentators and/or party spokesmen don't know what actual socialism is.

Meanwhile, why am I in college again? Midterms suck. :\

Yeah, they really don't. Most people automatically make the connection of socialism --> Marxism --> communism --> Leninism --> Stalin's Russia. Even if they don't know all of those terms and how they're actually different, that's the connection the brain makes.
