On the mend

Had my last physical therapy session yesterday. Oh, that's right, I never mentioned here that I injured my left shoulder back in January! Well, you know me - I prefer not to talk about health issues until they're in the past tense, and this latest one is just now starting to feel like it's resolving ( Read more... )

*careful hugs* Glad this has gotten better!

Oh, yeah, I can literally feel your pain. I've injured both my shoulders, the worst having been a separation from a motorcycle accident (1980, still nags me). My other shoulder may have been dislocated, or the rotor cuff damaged, in a freak mishap in a hospital stay (2001): I awoke from a deep fever sleep and found a nurse trying to move me around, and whatever she may have done to that shoulder I haven't had full movement in it since. Initially I didn't think much of this, but gradually, over time, I find I cannot sleep comfortably on my left side unless I curl my arm up under my head instead of being able to extend it.

Wow. I don't recall you mentioning your shoulder problems before. It was probably the sleep disturbance that troubled me most. I couldn't lie on my left side at all for 3 months, or position my left arm the way I was accustomed. So I learned to do something I've never done (on purpose) before, which is to fall asleep on my back! It's funny the habits we develop and aren't even aware of them. Like putting on clothes. I had to learn to put shirts on the reverse order I'd always done, and I couldn't get over how difficult that was. My motions were so awkward, I felt like a toddler just learning to put their own clothes on. Honestly it took me a week just to remember to lead with my left arm, not my right. I'd never had to think about it before. Muscle memory very quickly becomes automatic and it takes time and conscious effort to unlearn old motions.
