Cassettes of the audio kind

I'm really glad to hear ya did this ^v^
Unfortunately, components with rubber bands (belts) in them tend to have a shorter life span, and tape decks can be very common in that class. I still have at least half a dozen ones I want to get fixed, ... but in the meantime, I went and bought a direct-drive (used) one, so that should hold up quite a bit longer.

I suspect the boom box had a gear-driven cassette player which is why it way outlived both of my belt-driven component decks, but in the end, even it died, as you might expect a cheap $100 boom box to do after 30 years. The replacement deck that I am awaiting delivery on is another belt-drive Sony, but it's been refreshed top to bottom including new belts, so that inherent Achilles heel notwithstanding, I'm reasonably confident that, between us, I will be the machine that wears out first. ;-)
