I guess I missed my 40th anniversary of moving away from L.A. For some reason, I thought it was in April, but it turns out I left home for new horizons on March 18, 1983. And irony of ironies, where was I on March 18, 2023? In L.A.! For eye appointments, and for general R&R. As before, I stayed with my lifelong friend, Richard, who I grew up with ( Read more... )

What a great entry!
I've been to all of those except for Freakbeat and Rockaway. Does the latter charge to open up by appointment?
Did you ever get to go to A 1 Record Finders on Melrose? That used to be a very good one also. Glad PooBah was such fun! I haven't been to Amoeba since it went to this location. You probably remember PooBah on Walnut too, but luckily they kept the spirit when they moved. I'll haveta put FreakBeat on my list.
Since I've alwaredy got WAY too many records, I just haven't gone on seeking them for years.
Record conventions used be another great way of finding boots.
Did you ever get to go to any of the Rhino locations?

Nope, and actually all you probably have to do is call in advance and they'll let you in. I overheard a couple of phone calls while I was there which seemed to be that kind of thing.

No, but it sounds intriguing! Mentioning Melrose makes me think of Aron's. ^^

Oh yeah, I used to be at their front door at noon almost every day so I could get first pick of the new used records they put out. Me, and about a dozen other regulars, that is!

All I remember in that vein was the Capitol Records swap meet, but that ended around 1980. Are record conventions still a thing today?

Did you ever get to go to any of the Rhino locations?First time I went to Rhino they were in a temporary location on Santa Monica Blvd, but that was only for a year. (Around 1978-9.) After that, I was a ( ... )

It sounds like the forays I used to do in the early 2000's to comic shops looking for underground/independent furry comics. It was a fun way to see a city. I'm seriously hoping to build a man cave now that I'm retired so I can just sit and listen to all of my old vinyl and even all of the albums I inherited from my parents.

Lots of Broadway musicals. Also easy-listening jazz like Jackie Gleason.

Very interesting, and great story! Congrats on the finds.

Haven't been record shopping in ages though there's a large used store here in Santa Cruz and a bunch more around the area. Used to go to Rasputin, Amoeba in Haight Ashbury, Tower, and others.

One of the main reasons I gave up collecting is that it's not a "poor-man's hobby" like it used to be. The good stuff basically costs about 10x+ what it did way back when. I'd've brought home a stack of albums if it was still 1970s prices! Alas, I have to be a lot more choosy nowadays. ^_^
