COMING OUT ON TOP
“This is it,” Kazuya muttered to himself as he took a deep breath. Whereas his steps from the parking lot towards the studio were tentative, he forced himself to stride purposely and project confidence as he entered the studio.
As soon as he got in, the first person he saw was Ueda, playing the guitar and seemingly lost in his music. Kazuya's heart sank. Not Ueda. Cannot be Ueda.
Kazuya scanned the room and was heartened to see Koki and Nakamaru rapping and beat boxing, respectively, in one corner. Koki and Nakamaru is good. Koki and Nakamaru can work.
Kazuya took another deep breath, pulled out the small mirror he always have in his pocket and looked at his reflection. Practiced smile plastered on his face and hair perfectly in place, he replaced the mirror in his pocket and strode towards Koki and Nakamaru.
As soon as Kazuya approached, the rapper and the beat boxer stopped what they were doing. They looked at Kazuya and smiled. Here it goes, Kazuya thought.
“Hey, guys.” Kazuya's smile was wide and bright yet showed a tinge of nervousness. “I...I have something to say to you.” He paused for a full two seconds and took a deep breath.
He tried to smile wider. “This is not easy for me but I have to do this. Not only for me but for you as well.” He paused again, his smile wavered yet his eyes were hopeful. “We have been working together for so long and, really, you are not just mere band mates anymore. I didn't know when we stopped being just band mates but I feel like we have been friends forever.” Another pause as Kazuya cast down his gaze and shuffled his feet.
He looked up then, a slight blush on his cheeks. “You - Koki, Maru - have become such dear friends through all the trials and tribulations we have gone through. That's why I feel I owe you this... I owe you who I really am.”
Kazuya bit his lower lip indicating how unsure he was at proceeding. “I owe you the truth and I can only hope our friendship is strong enough for you to accept what I have to say.” Kazuya faltered and took another deep breath. “Koki...Maru...I'm gay.”
After having said that, Kazuya held his breath as he looked at his band mates. The smiles on Koki and Maru's faces did not waver. Kazuya sighed in relief. He did not think 'coming out' to his band mates would be this easy. He was so overwhelmed he wanted to hug the two but as he took a step forward, Koki and Maru simultaneously pulled out plugs from their ears.
“What did he say?” Maru asked Koki.
Koki shrugged and turned to Kazuya. “What did you say, Kame?”
Kazuya froze on his step with his arms suspended shoulder-high. He wanted to be crestfallen but he is Kamenashi Kazuya. His initial reaction to anything that fucks up his perfect plan is to get extremely pissed.
He just made a momentous revelation to Koki and Maru. He had written and rewritten his speech. He had rehearsed doing this scene over and over until he got everything - everything including the exact amount of quiver in his voice and the right hue of pink in his blush - perfect. He expected unbearable tension-filled silence. He expected angst-filled resistance. He expected a perfect Hallmark moment of teary-eyed acceptance ending with group hug. Dammit, he was wanted a heart-rending reaction of extreme dramatic proportions NHK would make a movie out of it for 24-Hour Television ala “Yuuki.” And he all got was DUH?
“FORGET IT!” Kazuya shouted as he fumed. He turned on his heels and stomped away from the puzzled Koki and Maru. The two looked quizzically at each other, shrugged and stuffed the ear phones back in.
Frustrated and pissed, Kazuya flopped on a bench and dropped his bag on the floor. When he looked up, he saw Junno sitting on the bench across playing with his PSP. Junno. Maybe Junno, he thought.
“Hey, Junno,” Kazuya called out. Junno looked up. At least he can hear me, Kazuya thought and became hopeful. “I have to tell you something...”
“Yeah...well...wait...” Junno said. “Give me a minute.”
After a few seconds, Kazuya started to impatiently tap his foot as he watched Junno's body-English convey that his tallest band mate is intensely engaged in trying to defeat his current virtual enemy.
After a minute, when Junno had slipped down on the floor and his long legs flailing, Kazuya stood up and kicked Junno. “If you don't stop and pay attention to me I swear I will break your legs in three...each.” For a good measure, Kazuya placed a booted foot on Junno's left shin.
Junno reluctantly paused his game and pulled himself to sit up straight. He stared up expectantly.
Kazuya shook his head to dispel his irritation. He shook his arms and shoulders then pulled himself straight, took a deep breath then smiled wide and bright yet showed a tinge of nervousness.
“I...I have something to say to you.” He paused for a full two seconds and took a deep breath.
He tried to smile wider. “This is not easy for me but I have to do this. Not only for me but for you, as well.” He paused again. His smile wavered yet his eyes were hopeful. “We have been working together for so long and really, you are not just a mere band mate anymore. I didn't know when we stopped being just band mates but I feel like we have been friends forever.” Another pause as Kazuya cast down his gaze and shuffled his feet.
He looked up then, a slight blush on his cheeks. “You - Junno - have become such a dear friend through all the trials and tribulations we have gone through. That's why I feel I owe you this... I owe you who I really am.”
Kazuya bit his lower lip. “I owe you the truth and I can only hope our friendship is strong enough for you to accept what I have to say.” Kazuya faltered and took another deep breath. “Junno...I'm gay.”
Junno's brows furrowed but kept quiet. Kazuya waited with bated breath for five seconds. Unbearable tension-filled silence. This is more like it, he thought. That was until Junno opened his mouth and asked, “Does that mean you don't like that my PSP is pink?”
“What?” Kazuya was lost.
“Because seriously, I can change it. I can make it purple, I know you like purple. Or I can use the original white.”
“What?!?”
Suddenly, the expression on Junno's face turned from apologetic to indignant. He pulled himself up and towered over Kazuya. “Hey, it isn't like I made my PSP pink to spite you. Not everything is about you, Kazuya! If you don't like like pink, then that's your problem! Sheez!” Junno turned away abruptly and in a few strides was out of the studio leaving the dumbfounded Kazuya.
“What the...?” Kazuya mumbled as he watched Junno disappear.
“What was that all about?” asked Ueda.
Kazuya shook his head. He was baffled. He looked at Ueda, hoping for enlightenment. “I said something to Junno which I think should have been a very poignant moment in our relationship as friends but as always he was way out of the loop...”
Ueda raised an eyebrow. “Poignant moment? With Junno?”
Indeed. Kazuya had to agree silently and he smirked. Did he actually expect to get his heart-rending moment of dramatic proportions with Junno? Kazuya shook his head, disappointed at himself.
He looked up and realized that if there is one person in the group that can understand “poignant,” that would be Ueda. He walked towards Ueda and took a deep breath. Ueda. Hopefully Ueda.
Kazuya smiled - wide and bright yet showed a tinge of nervousness.
“You - Tatsuya - have become such a dear friend through all the trials and tribulations we have gone through. That's why I feel I owe you this... I owe you who I really am.”
Kazuya bit his lower lip. “I owe you the truth and I can only hope our friendship is strong enough for you to accept what I have to say.” Kazuya faltered and took another deep breath. “Tat-chan...I'm gay.”
Kazuya waited for Ueda to react but five seconds went and Ueda was still blank. Kazuya tilted his head but he did not see anything plugged in Ueda's ears. He stared back at Ueda and frowned. “Well?”
“Are you planning to have a sex change?” Ueda asked.
“What? No!”
“Are you planning a highly-publicized same-sex marriage soon?”
“No!”
Ueda clearly looked puzzled. “So what are you saying?”
“I'm gay,” Kazuya said exasperated.
“And...”
“And?”
“And what?”
“And nothing!”
“Oh...okay.” Ueda looked at Kazuya a couple of seconds more then turned back to playing his guitar.
“Jesus H!” Kazuya shouted. “Can't any of you guys muster enough normalcy to give a proper reaction to my coming out ?!?”
Just then, Jin sauntered in, smiling and all bubbly. “Hey! What's up, Kame?”
Fuming Kazuya quickly turned towards Jin. “I want heart-rending reaction of dramatic proportions! I want my Hallmark moment and nobody's giving it! Not especially you, Akanishi!” Kazuya snapped, stormed away and went back to sulk on the bench.
Jin was dumbfounded. Completely clueless, Jin approached Koki and Maru. “What happened? Why's Kame upset? And what's a benchmark moment?”
When Kazuya went ape-shit, Koki and Maru had stopped and pulled off their earphones. Maru shrugged in response to Jin. “Dunno,” he said. “I think he was saying something about him being gay.”
“Was that what he said earlier?” Koki asked.
“Think so...” Maru said. He paused and surreptitiously stole a glance towards Kazuya. “You know Kame. He always wants to be the best. It sometimes pisses me that he acts like he's always better than thou...”
“Yeah,” Jin agreed, nodding. Then he asked, “Who's Dao?”
Koki, ignoring Jin because he does not know who Dao is either, also looked at Kame. His eyes narrowed at their youngest band mate. “So what if he's gay? I'm the only one who can do a decent rap among us.”
“Well, I'm the only one who can beat box,” Maru interjected.
Koki crossed his arms in front of his chest. “I have a 90+ batting average in winning jankenpoi.”
Maru refused to be outdone. “You know, back in grade school, my teachers always comment on how I look neat and dress properly.”
Through all that Jin was quiet, deep in thought. He remained quiet for a few more seconds through Koki and Maru's exchanges of how they can best Kazuya's being gay. Then Jin's face started to flush. Then he fumed. “That Kazuya! He always thinks he is all that! Well, for your information, I am gay, too! And I have the most awesome hip moves and I scream real loud. Let me see him top that! Hah!” And the three collectively glared at Kazuya.
All the while, Kazuya was suspiciously eyeing the three. When Ueda walked towards him, he could not help but ask,“What were they saying?”
Ueda shrugged. “Didn't hear much except Jin saying he's gay, too and something about hip moves and that he'll scream real loud when you top him.”
A smile slowly crept on Kazuya. Jin. Definitely Jin. Maybe he'll get his heart-rending reaction - well, maybe more like heart-racing moment of hentai proportions. And maybe not a movie produced by NHK but more like that Coat West something.
[A/N: Feel free to imagine the NC-17 scene that follows because I didn't write any. For those who do not know Coat West, look it up. I disclaim encouraging you to watch, though, especially those below 18. So there, that's why it's PG-13.]
