Just watched Garden State for the second time. And I watched it for number 2 time to try to understand why people like it SO much. Why was Garden State good? Because it did something that not many movies can do. It showed humor and light that can come in on everyday life and it made me laugh without resorting to stupid fart jokes, getting high, or constant sexual innuendo. The filming was awesome, quirky visuals and great colors added with an otherwise boring New Jersey gave it a great visual tone. The acting was superb, Natalie Portman's character was easy to like, she did the crazy thing very well. I especially liked Zach Braff, if you ever watch Scrubs you know he's good at being manic, but in this movie he played a dull lifeless guy who slowly awoken to realize the world around him, wasn't as numb as he thought. One last reason I thought the movie was great was the script. Everything was written so well and it all ran together so smoothly, it was romantic without cheese, it was funny without gross-outs, it was dramatic without being stupid, and it was all original
