Stories like that happen on any public transit system, not just the T. So your reasoning for NOT taking the T makes no sense since you take the NYC subway. What about buses to/from NYC and Boston. You take those a lot. How often is a bus involved in an accident? Reasoning = fail.
Actually, I try to avoid the NYC subway as much as possible, but seeing that I work in Times Sq., that is not a reality.
I do not take buses from NYC to Boston a lot. I actually rarely take them. I had a harrowing experience last week on one, so I won't take one for quite some time. There was also a horribly deadly bus accident here over the weekend, so that makes it less likely I will take a bus. I would never take a Chinatown bus, for instance. They are notorious for being dangerous. Buses are actually involved in situations quite frequently.
By driving I am in control for the most part, both schedule-wise and safety-wise, so that is my best option. It is my choice to take the T or not. Just look at news stories; the T has more incidents like this than other public transit systems. My reasoning does not fail because I am free to make my own choices as I see fit.
