Inspiration can be a prickly thorn; sometimes it's there -- sometimes it's not. Poetry is one of the most intricate and stubborn forms of creative writing, and it requires a lot of inspiration and inevitably a lot of time and effort to get it just right. You can't force it -- you can't set a date and say "Sunday night I am going to write a poem for Dave." -- it just won't work. The best kind of inspiration comes from spontaneity, and as such: so do the most well written of poems. It can be difficult to write down your most inspired thoughts throughout the day though because they can occur at the most inopportune times, but composition is induced more from impreparation than it is gathered construction. I know this may sound a bit silly, but try carrying a notepad with you, or any means to write things down as your best ideas come to you throughout the day. At the end of the day you'll most likely have comprised a pretty good list of ideas that you can work with.
