So throughout my life I have come across many different people from all walks of life. I have been best friends with druggies, alcholics...you name it and its probably a type of person that has been important to me at some point or another in my life

Well, if I knew the answer to that, I would be a completly different person right now. My relationship was based on this. I dated someone for 2-and-a-half years, and for one-and-a-half years, he kept this whole other life secret (at least from me, and no one, not one person who was supposed to be my friend, told me about it). So if you can find out how people do that to other people, let me know. It's pretty crappy.
At the same time, one of the hardest things I have had to do is to watch people you care about more then anything totally destory themselves, and everything they ever had going for them. It's hard to watch some of your best friends wreck themselves. But what I have come to learn is there is nothing you can do or say that is going to change them. It is something they have to decide on their own.
