A softer side of things

I was laying awake in my bed tonight. I had this desire to write a journal, so I figured I'd come downstairs and work something out before the moment fades. I loose too many moments that way. Just thinking about things until they burn away, impotent of any sort of benefit to me or anyone else. They become meaningless and I feel I have to move on. ( Read more... )

I always found it a bit strange that guys feel a contant need to prove to others that they're not "gay". It causes a lot of unsavory activity - from misogynstic statements to total exaggerations of sexual prowess. It also denies you so much that I find enjoyable - from appreciating the beauty of a flower to dressing myself (or my SL av) fashionably.

Perhaps it's because I enjoy traditionally "male" subjects, like math and science fiction, that I would advocate breaking away from the socially acceptable for your gender. I know that disregarding gender normatives (and people's opinions of me) has improved both my self-image, and my general mood. It is however, a long, difficult step to take for most.

What every you decide is the right thing for you, I hope you know that you can count on supportive hugs from me, too.

Gosh! I never replied.

Thanks very much for the support, Anne. :)

Yes, we don't need society telling us "Pink is a girls color" or "math is a guy's thing" or what have you. Personally I think fuchsia is a marvelous color. And its actually pretty cool when a girl is into subjects that people would generally consider "male" things. Mechanics and computers and things like that.

I think that tomboys are more acceptable than the "girly boys" though. But that's an outside perspective. I dunno, I always thought tomboys were cool. :P
