The first sensation an infant learns to process is scent with the new intake of air into his activating sinus' and nasal passageways. Followed immediately by physical sensation (Touch) and the processing of visible light. (Sight)
A child becomes comforted by familiar scents and presences.
This follows us because most other senses become dulled due to constant active use. So scent becomes more distinctive and associated with memory. Strong scents or scents associated with powerful memories such as flowers, or baking cookies, or visiting strange unique places can become more memorable by virtue of their smell.
For instance: I can't smell rubber cement without becoming nauseous and tired becuase rubber glue has the exact same smell as sleeping gas. Which has nausea as a side effect.
I went through 5 surgeries before i was 7 to correct my damaged eye and to this day I can't smell rubber cement without flashbacking to that terrifying time.
I respect the power of smell a great deal. And I'm delighted to know you do as well.
It sounds divine, your descriptions sounds way better than theirs. I am so hung up on Juke Joint that I have only tried 1-2 of the other scents I bought. abberantvirtue gave me a bit of Midway and it is so yummy too... Blood Kiss is great- it is very rich and smells like you are wrapped in velvet, sweet but with a richness that makes it not irritating. Maybe I will try Belladonna today...
That is sort of the crux of it, isn't it? The answer is that it does... there is just so much other emotion wrapped up in it that regardless of whether I like the scent (which I do), I don't think I can wear it without being really spacy.
It was mainly the mention of hay and animals that made me wonder. We were in Frederick, Colorado for our Requiem game this past weekend and I smelled what someone noted as being "cow country", but to me it smelled like the oysters and fish from the docks in Louisiana and Mississippi. I guess that's what I thought of when you said that.:P
Well, I ordered a six-pack of imps, and it's all your fault...
Anyway, I love reading your descriptions - you do know you are just a wonderful writer...everything you put down in words is just so vivid I can smell the scents and picture the place perfectly. :-)
