The new Harry Potter movie is about on par with all the others. Some cool effects, some cool mysterious magical stuff, some amusing scenes and cute British dialogue. But somehow I still have trouble getting into the J. K. Rowlings world, because all that magic just seems so arbitrary. In order for there to be a good story, there has to be ( Read more... )

All this makes it obvious you haven't read the books.

READ THEM BOOKS! They are WAY better than the movies, and all the points you mention for a good story are THERE- conflict etc. And there are the reasons why Harry and Ron aren't banging girls- saving the wizarding world being one among them.

Seriously. Read the books first- all 6 of them- and then pass judgement.

Hey Harshita….
You’re mostly right that I haven’t read any of the books. (All I’ve read was half of book 1 in a Hindi translation, back when I was studying Hindi.) But I think that a movie should be judged on its own merits, regardless of whether the books it’s based on are good are bad. If a movie can’t be appreciated without reading the book, then it’s probably not a very good movie. And the simple fact is that the Harry Potter movies suck. That doesn’t imply anything about the quality of the books, just like Lord of the Rings would still be a classic of literature even if Peter Jackson had screwed up the movie, and Homer’s Iliad is still wonderful and profound no matter how much they mangled it in Troy. Anyway, that’s my opinion :)
I enjoyed looking at your journal. Wow, you really like cricket! Have you ever watched ice hockey?

Well, its true the movies suck. The scripting sucks, the acting sucks, and every person who's read the books hated the movies.

Sometimes there's no use judging movies based on books on their own merit. They should be judged on how successfully they recreated the books, and fleshed out their characters, and how well the non-readers liked it/wanted to read the book after watching it. The LOTR series, the Godfather movies are the good examples for that. HP movies are NOT. (Haven't watched Troy yet. :D)

Still, have a go at the HP books if you have enough free time. They're pretty good!

Thanks! I came wandering over here since _53 has mentioned you so MANY times. Yup, I really like cricket!

Most of what I've seen of ice hockey is in the Mighty Ducks movies (which aren't THAT good, I know). I haven't seen a match recently. :(
I don't think ESPN shows ice hockey matches at a me-friendly time. But I do like the whole violent action in sports like rugby and ice hockey. It's cool! :D
