I only heard a couple of songs, but I remember thinking "I think I'll just listen to Black Star again".

it's mostly his pseudo-blues stuff, with his band "black jack johnson". if you are looking for an above-average traditional Hip-Hop album, go for Common or something.

I haven't heard the whole thing, but his track over GMF's "The Message" is downright awesome.
