I physically recoiled from my computer when that dude in the video talked about being "Really just intrigued by geishas anyway". Ewww.
Definitely, definitely agree with Raahi Rediy's statement quoted above, and I can also sympathize with the sentiment that less negative caricatures are better than nothing though, like you, I'm not sure I really agree. Personally I've been having issues lately with the recent rash of popularity of half-Asian actresses in the Hollywood TV machine. I hate the weird stereotype they're building for half-Asian chicks, but at the same time I'm so grateful to see someone that looks like me all over popular culture that I'd be suuuuuper sad if they skipped the actresses/characters altogether to avoid the problematic issues. I think the cultural commodification/not-so-terrible caricature issue is a lot like that. Icky, but when it's the only game in town.... not that that makes it right, but I empathize, totally.
Awesome vid, btw, and thanks for sharing! even if it does prompt stupid remarks from people. :P
I guess, like that one guy says in the vid too, it's worse to be completely ignored than to have some sort of (positive) representation. Sometimes I think it's kind of a slippery slope though, and things can go downhill with one-sided representations.
WUT. Also, I didn't know that then LOL He got snarked elsewhere for being a dude eventually and I was like "O". D: My biases are showing bc in my head "petals" = flowers = GIRL.
