WWII!China always seems to be portrayed as a weak, defenseless nation who gets conquered and abused/raped/humiliated by Japan, when China was actually pretty kickass during the war. He did lose a lot of territory and people to Japan, but he never was truly conquered and kept on fighting tooth-and-nail against him (going as far as destroying his own dams just to slow down Japanese troops!) for eight years. In fact, the Japanese emperor originally thought that China could be conquered in three months and got increasingly frustrated as the war kept dragging on, proving that China wasn't quite as weak as he took it to be.
Something about this badass!China during WWII/the Second Sino-Japanese War who gets his fair share of beatings but always stands back up after each beating and steadfastly refuses to give up would be much loved. Because he's 4000 years old, used to be a freaking empire, and should still have plenty of fighting spirit left inside him.
No rape, please. You can make a reference to the rape of civilians, but I don't want it played out in graphic detail or China himself to be raped.
Bonuses:
-The Nanking Massacre, while definitely a horrible incident, doesn't end with China being captured and tortured because as horrific as it is, it's not a war-ending battle and mainly just reinforces China's determination to keep on fighting.
-Japan isn't a complete monster. Granted, he shouldn't be really sympathetic here, but something like him having a wistful non-fighting moment with China about how they ended up on opposite sides like this or acknowledging that he underestimated China's resilience would be nice to see.
-Other nations' surprise at China's badassness is shown, because they all had written him off as a washed-up former empire who had no chance of winning the war against Japan. (With maybe even admiration mixed in?)
