Quick note to all my local NC friends -- tomorrow is Elizabeth Edwards's funeral, and the notoriously creepy Westboro Baptist Church is coming to town to protest, of course, because that's what they do. To show solidarity with the family and drown out the voices of the protesters, a colleague of mine is organizing an event called Just Wear Blue ( Read more... )

I have no idea. I think they just like to upset people.

Hoping that it will be possible to shift the focus to people's positive memories and wishes for the family, instead of, yknow, just feeding the trolls.

Do you mind if I link to this post?

I'm not in NC but others might be, and no matter what I ever felt or thought about John Edwards I loved Elizabeth Edwards.

Please link, repost, etc as much as you want! We're trying to get the word out. :)

Yeah, I always had a lot of respect for her, too.

Very nice.

If folks want to drown out the literal voices of the hatemongers, overwhelming numbers are helpful. They bring megaphones. (Enough unamplified voices will do the trick, I say from the experience at the GLBT rights protest at the 2000 United Methodist General Conference. We sang Jesus Loves Me and We Shall Overcome.)

WBC's theology could be summed up as "crazy moon logic," if one was inclined to be extremely charitable. Like, they celebrate deaths of American soldiers because anyone serving a government that allows gay people to exist deserves to die. That kind of thing.
