6. All mixed up in the wash // Hot water bleeding our colors
(Cold War Kids - ‘Hang Me Up To Dry’)
Tab strummed her guitar, fingers and plectrum moving as she played on autopilot. She wasn’t even thinking about the chords, her mind elsewhere as she just worked through the song. Benny kept the rhythm with his drums, the snare the only thing to get through the haze of Tabitha’s thoughts. That particular drum always did have a habit of going straight into her core. It was like the snare was inside of her body and every time Benny struck it, it reverberated through her body and made her hurt.
“Tab!”
“Mm…” she kept playing, and blinked slowly as she turned to look at Benny.
The blond smirked as he scratched the spot behind his ear with one of his sticks. “You know you’re playing ‘Knights in White Satin’, right?”
“Yeah, I-what?!” She stopped her playing and held her hands away like the guitar had just burned her. “You’re shitting me, right? I wasn’t. Was I?”
Her best friend and constant musical companion just sniggered. “Dude, I’ve never heard such a perfect segue between two least similar songs in my entire life. I wish CW was here, he’d be creaming his jeans.”
Tab ruffled her hair as she scrunched up her face. She couldn’t even begin to understand how she’d gone from a straight out rock song to the ballad by the Moody Blues. She didn’t even know what the song was doing in her head in the first place.
“Is this to do with Hot Pocket?”
“Hot Stuff,” she automatically corrected.
“Yeah, whatever. That guy you took back to your place.” He looked at her and raised his eyebrows.
Tab shook her head and glared at him. “No.”
“Riiiight. You just randomly break out into love ballads all the time.”
She rested her arm on her guitar, and sighed. “I’m fucked.”
