"Altazimutal system: azimuth 123° east, elevation 58° Zenith; Sigma sector, 67.2 million light years. Planet code: UF305"
Coordinates set. Preparing hyperspace shield.
Minho looked outside the spaceship, hypnotized by the infinite sparkly black that engulfed them, already lost in his thoughts.
"Minho"
He had been preparing for years for his first mission, but he couldn’t help feeling a bit anxious. He had been thinking about the possibility of intelligent life forms having successfully developed in that planet. Things would really change if that was the case.
Not that he minded.
"Minho!"
This time the voice snapped him back to reality. Minho looked at the other boy, whose fox-like eyes were judging him "Adjust your belt properly, it is too loose. Didn’t you learn anything at school?" "Sorry..."
Initializing traveling sequence, program ready. Awaiting approval.
"All systems are working fine, antimatter rockets are ready. Leader?" "Get it going Kibum" "Launch"
Launching count set. Prepare to depart in 5... 4... 3.....
They felt the G-force affect their bodies immediately, pushing them back against their seats. Minho looked outside and saw all the planets and stars pass them in a confusing blur, making it look like a horizontal multi colored rain.
It just lasted a few minutes though, after which they found themselves looking at a different view. The ship kept advancing slowly.
"Display sector map"
Displaying.
Minho saw how Kibum worked on a spherical hologram map (which he didn't quite understand), reaching with his fingers, making annotations on it.
"We're still a few hours away" Kibum took the command controls, glancing at their leader "it's ok, it could have been worst. Hey Minho" the leader called. Minho was taken a bit off ward but still looked at Jinki in the eyes "say, how about we review our information?" Minho blinked a few times and then hurried to rummage on one of his pockets, taking out what looked like a folded sheet of plastic. He unfolded it and set it in front, so the three could see.
"The planet UF305 was discovered a few decades ago, but it was just recently found that, due to its atmosphere, it was very probable it hosted some kind of life form." Minho explained, touching the unfolded screen to display a virtually made image of said planet. "So..." Kibum interrupted "you mean like microorganisms and such? How are we going to find those?" "It could be anything from bacterium to fully developed beings-" "That's why the Intergalactic Research and Exploration Division decided to put us on this ship in the first place" this time it was Jinki's turn to interrupt "I know, but, shouldn't they know those kinds of things already?" "Apparently the planet's distance is a disadvantage" Minho tried to get the conversation's lead again, touching the screen once more to show a graphic describing the planet's current conditions "it is too far away to be able to make this kind of investigation from our planet. The IRED thinks, though, that the most probable scenario for this is that life forms are in a very primitive state. Not too evolved, I mean" "I know what that means" mumbled a grumpy Kibum. "It's a short mission" Minho kept going, masterfully ignoring his companion "we are to come back in tree earth days"
"is that the one?" After a few hours, Minho was glad they could finally see the planet from close "yes, that's what the map indicates... Leader....... Jinki, wake up already!" well, apparently their leader was yet to have that pleasure and instead had to deal with his pilot's not so orthodox methods of waking him up. "What?! Turbulence...!" Jinki shot up in his seat, his belt keeping him from standing up and, though a bit startled, he still looked around confused and sleepy. "There’s the planet, we've arrived" "Oh, oh, I see" Jinki nodded with that silly expression still on his face. Minho wondered a bit (but just a little bit) how was that that guy had become the leader of their three-man group.
"Prepare to land"
Preparing. Scanning objective's surface.
From the ship, they could notice the surface colors. It was a beautiful sight, but it wasn't quite what they were expecting. It was obvious the planet had well developed ecosystems. They could see the patches of green covering almost all the surface, together with what they guessed were big masses of water.
It was very similar to how earth looked some thousands of years ago. It was also very probable it had developed in a similar way.
Scan complete. Landing place set.
They descended in a clearing, the ship landing softly. All the systems and motors slowly turning off. Minho suddenly felt as if they traveled back in time instead of space.
They stepped into the mushy land. They looked around in silence, the jungle that surrounded them responding in the same way. They were impressed, it was the strangest feeling. The atmosphere was too similar to earth's. They could breathe and move normally. "Seriously, what are the chances?" Apparently, Kibum was thinking exactly the same. "Maybe higher than what you’d expect" Minho was crouched, looking closely and feeling the soft plants beneath his feet. "In order for life to develop, there are some very specific conditions that have to be met. Is not the first time we learn about life in other planets, and even though none is exactly the same, they’re always very similar." "But none like this, right?" Jinki asked, still looking around "Right" Minho stood up "Maybe that’s why we still haven’t found intelligent life forms in other planets. Maybe the chances for the perfect conditions are very, very low" "Well, what do you say we do now?" "We camp here for today. Let's explore and take some samples" Minho headed back to the ship, followed by the others, but none of them noticed the pair of glistening eyes that silently stared at them from the jungle's shadow.
