Question re: police academy discipline

I'm currently writing a story in which my main character is enrolled in a police academy in a major city in New England. It's the first day of class and one of the new recruits shows up two minutes late. Someone else will be even later (let's say, ten minutes). I went to a quasi-military, and the officers in charge tried to channel drill sergeants. Most of the veterans in the class were annoyed by it. I thought it was sort of funny. We never played get on the bus get off the bus when I was in the Army.

Basically, they'd make you do push ups and yell and probably throw in some group punishment. At one point my academy got into using essay assignments as punishment, but that was widely ridiculed. Since they didn't grade them, they were just reinforcing bad writing habits.

Anyone who was not in line at roll call was late. Even if your ten steps behind. There was always away to get you thinking. Push-ups were the most often used form of punishment by T.O.'s = Training Officers. However, ten minutes late would result in push-ups, a specific writing assignment like "Why I was late? and Why it's important to be on time". Perhaps you would be assigned to carry the units flag, which would add a bit more responsibility to your day while at the academy ( ... )
