Hi, have you considered ripping out the entryway doorway, opening up that entire corner, and relocating the door to where the window is now, or just eliminating it altogether? You would expand the available floor space dramatically if that wall with the interior door isn't load bearing. Another thought would be to utilize that little area as a pantry, mounting narrow shelves up to almost ceiling height to take advantage of every square inch...Sally

I have not considered this because 1. I need a vestibule/mudroom/air lock. 2. The window cannot be changed into a door; no room on exterior for steps required to exit. 3. Can't eliminate it altogether - I need a back door. 4. Can't use it as a pantry, since I need it as a mudroom/entry. 5. I'm about 75% done. BTW, on the matter of the tile/wainscot (the original question) I've decided to tile the left side of the door, wainscot the right.
