I made the horrible mistake of trying to paint my dining room deep wine red. Wow. 3 coats later and I've given up. It's still blotchy and I given up hopes of it ever being a solid red ( Read more... )

Yea I experienced the same thing when trying to paint my living room a solid red. I actually got lucky with the Eddie Bauer Paint from Lowes, seems to go on alot smoother then other brands for me, but for the price I guess it should ( ... )

Thank you for the tips. I've got to decide what to do! It's such a tough decision. :/

I used a good primer. :/ Home Depot put as much dye into the base as they could, and it turned out pink.

I don't have plaster walls, I just have regular drywall. But I'm going to look around and see what I come up with.

I will definitely post tons of pictures, it is going to be amazing once it is totally done.

How deep is the dark on the wall now?

Glaze is the only way to go to achieve a look like that. Go to http://www.aquafinishing.com/

These are the real glaze products used by the pros. (Even Debbie Travis uses them) You wont find this stuff at the local store. AquaGlaze is the stuff you want. You mix it with regular paint. 1 part paint to 3 parts glaze at the least.

What color you ask? That depends on what color you want more of. The top glaze color is going to be the dominant tone. Don't be afraid to spot check on a sample first to be sure you are going in the right direction. Also dont be afraid to get yourself some of those Sample paints that Benjamin Moore and Sherman Williams has started marketing.

In the future...Pratt and Whitney makes awesome red tones that go on rather smoothly.

Thank you for the tips!

There's a retailer near me, so I'm going to go check it out.

The color is pretty rich and dark. I'm going to paint it on a sample piece of drywall and take it with me to the store so I can get the right thing.

I used Behr paint, thinking it would be okay. :/

Red can be a very unforgiving evil entity. I am a professional faux finisher. If there is one thing I've learned over the years, cheap paint is cheap paint. Always go for the better brands especially for the darker colors. It's the pigment that makes it expensive. Cheaper paints use less pigment to keep the cost down. That's why SO many coats are required. Which is also why you really aren't saving any money anyway after the umteenth coat of hell. Good luck and if you need more help I'm always out here in cyberspace somewhere, just ask...:)

Is Behr paint cheap? I used it for 3 other rooms in my house with no problem. Of course, they were lighter colors, but I thought Behr was on the better side of the paint brands?
