I was in the interior design program at OSU. Interior design is not the same as interior decorating. Interior design includes space planning and stuff. The program teaches you to make decorating decisions, but it also teaches you to work with an arcitect planning the flow of a building, where the walls and plumbing should be. What rooms should be near which rooms. Alot of the gradutes I talked to got jobs laying out office buildings or deciding what the design scheme for X new coffee shop should be. We also had alot of people that ended up specializing in lighting design and desgned just that for various places. It definately does cover restoration and painting techniques but there is alot more on the University level and alot of people weren't prepaired for that when they signed up for the program so I figured I'd give you a heads up.
I know that there is a snaller school in Portland that specializes in more of the decorating angle. It'a a shorter program than the OSU one. You might want to look into thinks like this in your area.
I have a rather unusual perspective on this, as I am finishing up my second ID degree and my degree in restoration at the same time. I also own a small ID business
