My advice to you is going to be limited by the fact that I am new to interior design myself. I've DONE interiors as part of my work in architecture firms for many years (mostly retail and office design) but I had very little to do with specifying finishes - mostly it was space planning and I guess what you would call "interior architecture." Now that I left an architecture firm to work for an interior designer, I’m still learning about the different requirements of the industry myself

Thanks for this great post! It was really helpful. I'm in the extremely fortunate position of working for an internet business that sells educational software, so once I enroll in classes I'll be able to get student priced software at practically reseller cost. One thing I've definitely noticed is that students from the Interior Design Institute and other similar schools are buying AutoCAD and Solidworks like crazy. My community college does offer an AutoCAD for Interior Designers class, so I lucked out there!
I've been working with Photoshop for about 3 years now and had already been thinking about ways to use it in design. I enjoy using art rendering programs, but I like good ole pen-and-paper, too. So now all I need is a tablet PC! ;) m
