this sounds like it belongs in a relationship community! :-)
I've somewhat been in your situation before. Ultimately it comes down to compromise, and hopefully he'll meet you halfway. But a few ideas to toss out (without knowing exactly what the stuff is)...
Can his "stuff" go in one special place that is more out-of-sight, perhaps a spare bedroom or something? Or can it be organized in an unobtrusive way, perhaps in a closed cabinet, or something. Or maybe you have a cleaning party or a garage sale? Tell him you'll buy him something fun and new if he throws out a few trash bags of stuff?
My husband gets one room (or side of a room) for his stuff, and everything else gets put in the basement. I have the same. And communal living spaces require both parties to agree on stuff. If one of us hates it, out it goes. It works pretty well--we still feel like we have our space but we hold things like the bathroom, kitchen, laundry room, and living room to be decidedly neutral territory.
