Are custom groups any different from friend groups in LJ?

That's what I was afraid of. Based on what you've said (as I don't have a Dreamwidth account with which to test), either the mechanism by which the groups are retrieved is broken on Dreamwidth or Dreamwidth has intentionally changed how the mechanism works. As I could not find any documentation on the XML-RPC interface from Dreamwidth, I can't tell which is the problem, nor can I fix it, unfortunately. It might help to open a support ticket with them.
