Woo. After months of sitting around on my ass because of work, I'm using the benefits of my new-found free time to start running. I used to be decent at cross-country, but alas, sitting on one's ass depreciates said skills quite rapidly. A bunch of coworkers run a regular route 3 times a week and I'd like to join them, but that route is 3.5 ( Read more... )

3.5 miles isn't bad. That's close to a 5k. A 5k is pretty easy. You may not be able to keep up their pace... but I bet you could be running that distance in a couple weeks, maybe a month. I think I ran my first 5k about 3 months after I started jogging.

Yeah. I just started, and by no means do I aim to jump into that until I am well comfortable. Considering how uphill their route is I'd rather be able to run a 5k first on flatter terrain.

How often do you jog?

Right now I'm getting out maybe 4 or 5 times a week. I'm limiting my distance though till I see how my foot deals with the impact.

i love running with my iPod mini. i think the weight and storage capacity is just right. i was a bit displeased with the battery life. but the new generation has doubled it. i'd like an armband that allowed me to protect the mini AND hold it securely at the same time (my current only allows for one of the other). but i just ran into someone at my gym that had a 3rd party armband that does both.

a few of the marathon runners i train with have bought iPod shuffles. almost all of them have fried theirs at least once. my friend julie is on her third. the shuffles don't seem to do well with sweat over extended periods of time. although, the good news is that for the four seperate cases i know of this happening the shuffles in question were all still under warranty. be sure to keep your receipt handy. i'm told apple is pretty understanding about fried shuffles.

Do they get fried from the movement/vibration, from falling down/dropping, or soley from the sweat/moisture?

I run with mine. I only run about a mile so far, though. I am curious what would cause them to crap out. Mine is NOT a shuffle, and I don't want to fuck it up!

i'm not certain of the exact cause, of course. but constant exposure to sweat/moisture would seem to make the most sense. the runners with shuffles i know tend to wear them with the neckband and will tuck it underneath their shirts so it doesn't bounce. we're also talking about marathon runners... meaning they'll typically sweat into the damn thing for several hours on weekends and about 3x on weekdays for 30-40 mins each.

i run with my ipod mini and the movement/vibration isn't a problem. the only time i've had a problem with it falling and dropping was in the start of the LA marathon. it was so crowded that runners would graze each other in passing. i got my mini knocked off a couple of times that way. aside from that, it's stayed on pretty well.
