I'm with you. I may not be getting paid what I'm worth, and I work my ass off, but on the whole I also absolutely adore my job and the environment here in the workplace.

My guess, based purely on pop psych and personal observations, is that some people don't want that much freedom and are happier with more structure. Give them the opportunity to get that structure and more $$$ to boot, and its not surprising that many people jump for it.

Well, as I'm currently putting up with high stress, low pay, low to moderate job prospects, and hating dragging myself in to work every morning, I don't know where that puts me on your scale of people's job preferences. Probably under "psycho."
