sorry I'm so late to the party... RL has been crazy lately.

the general stuff

Name: Kate

Age: 25

Location: New England, USA

3 things you love: sudoku and crossword puzzles, punctuation, and anything from the UK (except marmite. gross. true story, I once thought it was honey and put it in my tea. yeah.)

3 things you hate: most isms, the sound of velcro, humidity

A line from the last song you've been listening to: ummm seeing as I just listened to a solid like 5 hours of my Bollywood playlist and I don't want to offend anyone with me terrible transliteration of Hindi lyrics, I'll go with the last bit I recall from the Olympics: we can be heroes, just for one day

Your other fandoms: None really - I'm fairly new to this fandom and I love it so much that I don't really want to venture out... If I were to sally forth and join other fandoms, I'd probably go for HP and LotR to start. I'm always open to recommendations!!

Your interests (hobbies, passions, etc.): watching random movies and tv (loving Foyle's War on Netflix...), ( ... )

The Others are good, R'hllor is bad. Calling it now.
OH GOD YES, THIS.

I KNOW RIGHT?!?!

There's an awesome fic at AO3 (The North Remembers) where it's implied that the Others aren't quite as bad as we think they are, and I was like YES THANK YOU.

I have this feeling that the whole story is really just about the Others vs. R'hllor and all of the people of Westeros and Essos are just pawns in their epic game.

Oh I think I remember seeing that fic but didn't get round to reading. Thanks for the reminder. The more I hear about this R'hllor chap the less I like him: and I started out thinking he was dreadful because the burning of the Seven on Dragonstone was really, really unpleasant to read for some reason... It just felt wrong.

Your Marmite story made me laugh. I tried it for the first time about a month ago and it was the weirdest experience - I was like, "Dear Gods, HOW salty??" and then "... Why can't I stop eating this? It's making my face hurt. But... MORE." Marmite is the real English disease.

the general stuff

Name: Iris
Age: THIRTY. YOU HEARD. (Today. Going on 15.)
Location: London, UK
3 things you love: Having so many books I can build a fort; Tintagel castle; coffee.
3 things you hate: Sexism; loose tobacco (it FREAKS ME OUT I don't know why); the Conservative party.
A line from the last song you've been listening to: She makes me bleed, she makes me cry, she makes me scream, she makes me sigh (Mansun - She Makes My Nose Bleed)

Your other fandoms: I lurk in Harry Potter (chiefly Sirius-related things), Buffy, LOTR, and am obsessed with Neil Gaiman's Sandman/The Endless but can't find much recent out there.
Your interests (hobbies, passions, etc.): Medieval fencing and related history, witchcraft and mythology, crime (law &c, and some fiction, mainly older noir-ish stuff), occasional fits of manic knitting.

What kind of stuff do you post about? Mainly ASOIAF squeeing and fic and such, am new-ish to LJ and still settling in. I have ceased angsting about my actual love life, people will be pleased to know. Occasional ( ... )

I have a love/hate relationship with loose tobacco. On the one hand, I am fascinated by how nimble one's fingers must be to roll cigarettes, on the other hand, the concept of carrying a bag of tobacco around is just... odd.

How is the LotR fandom? I feel like that would be my next step, but I've really been spoiled by the asoiaf fandom (at least on LJ) and I worry about getting stuck with crazy fanboys.

Also, HELL YES medieval stuff. I got my master's in gothic sculpture (in London... oh how I miss London...) and I'm like 99% sure I'm going to do a PhD.

friends?

My parents both smoke roll-ups and I used to freak out if I found any bits on the furniture or whatever... Ugh, I just can't handle it. Right near the beginning of The Maltese Falcon Hammett does a really long and vivid description of Sam Spade rolling his own. I practically came out in hives ( ... )

I'm with you on every single one of your least favorite characters. Victarion = giant yawn. Sometimes I think it's my fault and that I'm just not reading him right, he's just so blah.

I'm curious, what is about Catelyn that doesn't do it for you? She drives me nuts for many reasons (some I can articulate, some I can't) but I feel like I'm going against public opinion with my dislike of her (ditto with Robb).

So many people love Victarion and I just don't understand it. He seems pretty rigid to me--if I had to pick an older Greyjoy to read about it would be Euron. He's kind of nuts and I have a feeling his character is just there to make Westeros more chaotic and mess up everyone's plans, haha ( ... )
